On that model I believe you remove the cup on the top of the agitator and then the bolt that holds the agitator to the stem. Here is a diagram of the assembly.

Thanks Richard, but I see NO BOLT !. Is there a special "puller" device I can make for removal (similar to a battery cable puller) ?

OK, I have never actually worked on that model. Take a look at this diagram I found in my database.http://cdn.appliancepartspros.com/images...

The diagram does NOT show a bolt, but it does show a part 2-6478. What IS that ? Maybe it's a screw... or just maybe I am SCREWED !

Hate to say this, but if its not agitating, its probably a transmission problem. The transmission will lock up in spin mode. The Maytag's are pretty bad about this problem. Sorry to say, but probably pretty costly to replace the part as well. Good Luck!!! Jim

SOURCE: strange sound Maytag top load washer about 4 yrs old

It sounds like your bearings went bad. Using powder soap kills the bearings. THis also depends on the model of maytag. IF you lean the washer back look to see how many belts it has. if it has one it is really a maytag made by amana. Those are known for bad bearings. So good luck with your bearing problem. You will probably have to call out a technician Its a big job.

It sounds like the balance is off due to the bearings being worn. It might be a better idea to look for a new machine. It is a difficult job. Parts alone will be 500-600 dollars

My 80 series kenmore washer will not agitate unless I push down on the center of the part that agitates. it pins fine. is this something I can fix myself? is it worth fixing or should I look at replacing...

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

This problem points to a couple of places:

First, I'd pull the agitators and check for worn or damaged splines inside the agitator or on the agitator shaft.

Following is a description of how to take them out.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

If the agitator and shaft are OK, the problem may be in the transmission.

See the following Whirlpool / Kenmore installation and service manual for top load, direct drive washers.

Starting at page 10, you'll see a description of how the transmission changes from agitate to spin mode.

The key (and likely problem) is the "agitator spring".

The spring holds the agitate gear down so that the two sets of splines on the agitate gear are connected and the agitate rack can turn the agitators.

See the following Whirlpool parts list for a blow-up of the transmission and how the various gears and springs connect.

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

See the following for how to remove the transmission and clutch.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

Tearing apart the transmission is a bit messy but if the problem is the spring or agitate cams, it's a lot less expensive to fix than a $170 transmission.

Remove the clutch (the spring holding the clutch to the spin pinion is a bear to replace.

Remove the 8 transmission screws carefully, the transmission is full (15 oz.) of 80-90 weight oil.

Remove the transmission cover and drain the oil.

Pull off the spin pinion.

Carefully remove the clip that holds the main Spin Gear on and remove it.

Push down on the agitate spring and remove the spring clip. Note where is attaches to the main shaft.

Check the spring, Agitate Cams and the cams in the Neutral Drain Assembly.

Re-assembly is obviously the reverse of taking it apart.

In answer to your other questions:

If you're reasonably comfortable with tools you can fix it yourself.

When we had a problem with ours, we ended up spending less than $30 replacing the agitate cams, neutral drain assembly and oil instead of $170 for a transmission. It was worth fixing.

As an aside, tearing the washer apart will give you the opportunity to completely clean it.

Today my maytag top loader had a string get caught under the agitator. It sounded like a jack hammer nad then started smoking. I shut it off, pulled the plug, took out the contents, plugged it back in and...

the agitator is held down by pins, the pins are attached to bracket, the bracket is attached to bearings and motor. Either the motor or bearings could be shot. Also there is a belt that spins the motor. IT is very likely that the belt kept spinning while agitator was stuck and burned the belt off.

"howling" noise during spin cycle (still there after changing burned off belt)

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
