Try pressing the power button next time. That will help you to turn on from an Hibernation.
Alternative you can disable this feature (not recommended for laptops)

  1. Open Control Panel.
    • On the Windows XP default Start menu, click Control Panel.
    • On the Windows XP classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open Power Options.
    • If the computer is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.
    • If the computer is in Classic View, double-click the Power Options icon.

  3. In the Power Options Properties dialog box, click the Hibernate tab.
  4. On the Hibernate tab, clear the Enable hibernatation check box, click Apply, and then click OK.

Want to know how to undo FN Hotkeys: i.e., FN Esc. How may I reactivate screen after I put it to standby, 0r FN F1 when in Hibernate mode. Please notify how to properly activate and DEACTIVATE...

Trying using the "numlock" key it should undo the Fn hot keys. If your notebook is in hibernate state, using the power-up switch on the notebook will activate you notebook. This will ask you for a password, if you have been using one to logon to you notebook. The FN+F4 or F5 will toggle between a blank screen and a display.

The display on my ibm thinkpad r40 is black after initial dim ibm screen. External monitor works fine though. This happened immediately after I used my ibm with a projector this morning? Fn F7 does not...

The problem youve discribed does seem to point to your back light has failed on the laptops lcd display, i dont know exactly how this would accure just using a projector though, go into bios again and try loading factory settings.

This problem could also be the inverter if you cant make out even a slight image on the screen.

let me know what happens. thanks

The laptop was unplugged and went into standby mode when the battery ran out. I have recharged the battery but the standby indicator is still on and nothing happens when I try to start it.

can you take out your battery and plug in the power? if it works, i suspected it's a battery faulty. if not please make sure to charge up your battery up to 100% then boot up your machine normally.

ToshibaHotkey

Hi,
go to control panel,power options,
change your power settings
stop Hibernation,
" choose what to do when I hit the power button" etc....

Hibernation causes problems with startups

Don't use hibernation, use standby,sleep
or turn it off completly
should cure the problem

Laptop Freezes

You may have a problem with standby versus hibernation mode. Go into control panel and look for your power options. You need to look for power options for standby etc. Ideally you should not allow your computer to hibernate. Some laptops just wont come out of hibernation mode successfully so preventing it is a good option. Secondly scan your laptop for viruses at the earliest opportunity

Notebook System Crash

Hey there SeanJohn79, have you tried hooking an external monitor to your laptop. You can move the video output back and forth, from external, LCD + external, LCD using Fn + F7. Hopefully this will allow you to see the necessary info for diagnosing the problem. Good Luck. Keep us posted! In case you are not aware, these are some display related key functions:
Fn + F3 = turn off lcd
Fn + F8 =Switch computer screen size
Fn + F12 =Hibernation mode, power for 4 secs releases.
Fn + F4 = Standby mode, press Fn key to return to normal
If you haven't tried switching some of these, give it a shot.
