What is the bore and stroke on briggs & stratton model 311707 engine?

I'm trying to buy a set of rings and they have std. .010, .020 and .030 over size but I can't find the cylinder bore specs to know which to order.

these are common for doing this ,if you dont want to pull it down and hone the cyl. then i would use a heavier oil say 20w/50and that will probabley solve your problem

How do I remove the piston from my Briggs and Stratton 17hp horizontal shaft mower?

if the piston big end bear is removed and the piston will not come out of the bore because something is stopping it , it will be from a wear ring area at the top of the bore (wear ridge)
it is where the top ring stops and there will be a lip down the bore the distance from the top of the piston to the first ring
all cylinders wear big at the top to normal at the bottom ( wear taper) and the ridge is formed over time from wear or in the case of small engines from a failed air filter which allows accelerated wear of the bore ( dusted engine) and produces a ridge that the top ring jams on so preventing piston removal
to remove it you can buy a ridge remover tool from a good tool shop or auto spare shop or you can get a small grinder wheel in a drill and just grind the lip section off.
provided you restrict the grind to no lower than the lip it will not affect the engine

You can use regular gasoline in your lawn mower engine as long as it is not a two stroke. If you add oil separate from the gasoline, then it is four stroke, not two stroke. Something to keep in mind with today's gasoline is that it starts to go bad after about a month. So for example, if you leave fuel in it over the winter you will most likely have starting problems come the spring. These problems could include hard starting up to non start requiring a carburetor cleaning. Keep these things in mind when you buy your fuel and when you store your mower. If you are going to buy a lot of fuel or not use the fuel very fast, you can add fuel stabilizer to the gas soon after you get it to help with these problems. I am living in drought striken Texas and I use fuel so slowly right now that I have taken to adding fuel stabilizer when I purchase it.

if engine seems to labour when trying to start as if too much compression ?

try adjusting to in and ex valve clearance to 0.003" inlet and 0.005" ex

inlet valve is the bottom valve, and has a alloy push rod. ex valve is top valve and has steel push rod ( as viewed from the front of the machine with rocker cover off ) )

note rotate engine with plug out to tdc compression stroke , then rotate it down the bore on power stroke by 1/4 inch ( 6.35 mm ) this is the point for setting in / ex valve clearances

manual says 1/4 pst tdc on compression stroke - this eliminates decompressor lift from the setting

I need to know the over head vave setting for the intake and exhaust on a 17.5hp Briggs & Stratton vertical shaft, single stroke lawn mower.

set piston to tdc compression stroke then run it down the bore a 1/4 inch

set the tappetts to inlet the bottom valve ( alloy push rod ) to a tightish 0.004" and set the
ex valve the top one ( steel push rod ) to 0.005"

setting at 1/4 pst tdc eliminates decompressor from upsetting valve clearance seting

Hi, I have a Masport 635 Lawn mower, I think it is 2 stroke, just petrol ( not mixed with oil ). I don't know anything about how to maintain mowers. But today I mowed the back yard, it went fine, then...

If it is two stroke it must have oil mixed in with it. Try pulling the cord and notice if there is any compression if not then it is the pistion and if it doesn't turn then it is seized with lack of oil.Now if it is four stroke take the plug out put it to the head and pull the cord to see if there is any spark if there is it's a fuel problem.

Low oil & smokes - 2yrs old

The piston rings need to be replaced. The cylinder might need to be bored out bigger, then put in
a bigger piston.

I have briggs and stratton 5.5 hp motor model 12h702.And oil comes out of the breather.Could it be the valve guides or the rings. It smokes out of the breather hose and exhust a little.

It sounds more like badly worn rings and/or a glazed bore. Provided bore is not badly worn, a bore hone and a new set of rings should solve the problem. While yuo have the engine apart, a valve grind and check/adjust of the valve clearances wouldn't hurt.

Starting problem after setting for ten days or more

Take the spark plugs out when this occurs and try to pull it through--does it expel fuel or oil? This should tell you whether you have a flooding fuel problem, or maybe the crankcase is overfull of oil causing it to leak into the combustion chamber through worn valve seals or piston rings. Hope this helps!
