Question about Brother XL-2230 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Open Question

Machine makes an angry noise - stops moving.

This happens at random when Im sewing but it's becoming more frequent. The tension on top gets very tight and as its in the middle of having the spasm, I've noticed that the tension on top at the base of the thread does like a backfire.
The bobbin tension seems fine and I can wind the thread back on both the top thread and the bobbin. If I just try to keep going manually or by pedal it creates a cluster of crazy thread underneath the fabric.
I've tried adjusting the tension as this worked on my old singer machine but this doesn't seem to be working.
Ive also moved the **** thread from around the bobbin area and it's clean.
Please advise.
THANKS!

This is an answer to another person with a similar complaint. Try the suggestion below, it may fix the problem.

From your description it appears that you have tried tension settings on the upper tension control adjustment knob without success.
Check that the bobin tension is adjusted correctly by taking out the bobin complete with the spool.
Pull the cotton thread and it should be a smooth light pressure if the tension is correct. If it is tight to pull or pulls freely then adjust the tension screw which is found on the outside of the bobbin. The screw is very small and requires a minature size screwdriver. The adjustment will only be a slight turn of the screw one way or the other to obtain the correct tension(depending if it was loose or tight).
Once this is set reinstall the bobin and tread up the machine, hopefully with the upper tension set at approx."2" the machine will sew correctly.

SOURCE: My brother LS-1520 sewing machine is having major tension problem

Try some metal bobbins, #15 or SA 156. that seems to help. If, you don't have a manual go to brother.com and download one for free

Why does it make a knocking noise as it sews?

the needle position is up tight in the holder and no where else
the cut away bit of the needle faces the bobbin case hook and the groove in the needle faces the end of the machine and gives clearance for the thread to pass through the material
from your description and what you did, the needle /hook timing needs adjusting as it is out
turn the machine over by hand as in sewing and watch the position of the eye of the needle and the bobbin case hook
just as the needle starts to move up, the hook should be just above the eye of the needle at the edge of the needle
The adjustment is by loosing off the screw on the vertical shaft at the end of the machine that is attached to an arm that moves the needle up and down and move that bit up or down until the needle is positioned correctly to the hook
tighten up the screw
next is to check the needle tension is not too tight
workshop manuals are available on line in pdf version or take it to a sewing machine repair shop for a proper diagnosis

On my bobbin side of the materal after i sew its just tons of thread on that side and the stitch is not tight

Loose on bottom indicates trouble with top tension. Re thread your machine with the presser foot UP. sew a test seam. If you still have problems adjust the top tension. sew a test seam. If you still have problems clean between the tension discs with some sturdy fabric and unwaxed dental floss. Sew another test seam.

Still problems? Wind the top tension tight then back off 1/4 turns until the seam is balanced.

The machine won' tsew as if the tension is too tight any ideas?

try rethreading the machine top thread & bobbin

try a tension of 3 or 4

make sure the thread move smoothly around the tension disks

make sure before threading the needle that the thread pulls smoothly

Sewing machine XL 5500 settings

Your bobbin is probably too loose. When you set a new bobbin, stop every now and then and try with your fingers nail if it's nice and tight enough. Not extremely tight, but tight, not loose and moves easily when you set your finger between the threads.

With most fabrics (99%) the plate is fine at the the top position, just with very thick and "fragile" (satins etc) you might need to adjust it.

Settings: Tightest tension for the thinnest materials, more loose for the thicker ones, better have a test piece, it rarely goes under 5 anyway.

Thread tension for regular seam sewing

oil the shaft for the presser bar and keep moving it up and down(it may take a while) until it moves freely. Always use Sewing machine oil Not 3N1 oil.
Tension:
If the thread is loose on the bottom of the fabric, it's actually the top thread is too loose. Think of 2 little elves playing tug of war in your machine, one on top and one underneath. If you have loops on bottom, the top needs to pull harder (tighten top tension). If you have loose thread on top your top tension is probably too tight and your bobbin thread too loose

JONES SEWING MACHINE PROBLEMS

We have a very old Jones Sewing Machine (1960's) we are having trouble with the thread at the moment. When we sew the thread gathers up underneath the material that we are trying to sew. Any suggestions to overcome this problem?

Machine tension knob does not work.

Use a better quality thread. Sometime old or cheap thread never works right. Check to make sure you have the right needle for your fabric.
