Win XP PC does not recognise my SJ 5300C USB scanner
When connecting powered-up scanner to my Windows XP PC, there are no signs that it is being recognised by system (No additional usb devices shows up)
when i plug in power for scanner separately, the lamp lights up, then carriage moves a bit, and nothing more happens. lamp stays on.
are there any ideas what to do, besides simply throwing it out? (scanner is off warranty)

First thing i would do is go to the control panel and see if theres any thing in the camera and scanner profile. Then go to the manufactures site and see if theres an updated driver for the printer. if so download the new driver then see if it recconizes the scanner. if that still does not work then you may have to run it in a different compatability mode. good luck

You may be in the market for a new scanner if simply plugging it in doesn't get it working.
Are you still on ME? Might be time to step up to XP or vista, nevertheless, try this.. works great on my XP pro and Vista with some tweaking, but straight forward with XP Pro. Good luck!
Does it show up in your hardware profiles? What does it say on details when you right click the scanner? When you installed the driver, was it before your plugged in the USB? You may have to uninstall and reinstall it again, this time use the one from HP's website with any patch if applicable. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=sj664en&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=58381&os=228&lang=en If you have successfully used it in the past, follow the install prompts and restart.. instead of using the products software, use Windows included scanning program which is much better than the proprietary one designed by HP. As long as you have the proper driver installed your system will know how to apply it.
Most likely your scanner was put offline by a microsoft update. Mine was knocked out of business by a hardware driver update downloaded from microsoft update.
Try to roll back the scanner driver (my computer, system, hardware select scanner, properties, rollback driver to prior version) or go to your system restore function and do a restore to a earlier date when you know the scanner was working and see if that fixes it.
After disconnecting and later reconnecting the scanner no longer worked. The lamp started flashing 6 times with pause. The scanner was no longer recognised by the computer. I fixed it by disconnecting the usb and current plugs, and reconnecting the current plug while pushing the first en third buttons from the left on the front of the scanner.
Did you install the software/driver? Did windows recognize your scanner in your hardware profile? Don't use the software from HP, It sucks. If the HP software is not working correctly, then Use the one provided my your operating system works great. Go your Control Panel, Printer and other Hardwares and click Scanners, make a shortcut to your task or start menu and Scan Away. For Faxes, etc. import in outlook or other email client, etc.
Most likely the destination folder for the scanning is a shared folder with limited rights. As the administrator, reset the permissions for that folder or redirect the software to a common folder with read/write/creation etc... access.
Also, make sure you are using the HP provided drivers and not those from Microsoft.
