SOURCE: screen goes dark

Either the backlight lamp or the invertor for it is failing. I suspect the colors and contrast isn't as it once was either.

You definitely need to bring your laptop to the Toshiba shop near you. There they can facilitate the replacement of your laptop's body (casing). It is a critical task to do and I think a Toshiba authorized shop can help you with this. Thanks.

SOURCE: Can you solve the problem

You can try to download and install the Fingerprint Utility here and check if you will receive the same error message.

Title: Toshiba Fingerprint Utility for Windows Vista / XP
Download and Install

If the reinstallation of this software does not help then the issue must be related to a corrupt Windows Vista files and in my opinion the usage of the Toshiba recovery CD should helps.

Thanks for using Fixya

Screen goes blank

This is most probaby because of a loose display cable connection .As the cable runs through the hinge slot to the mainboard of the laptop, open the laptop full and try pressing carefully on the left side of the laptop near the hinges area. this should give you the display back.

Check Ebay, or remove the bezel around the monitor and there should be a model number on the inverter. Google that and it should lead you to a place to purchase a replacment.

Also, always Google for complaints against a site before you order from there. PC part sites have this ability to look really sketchy.

My screen won't lite up

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Hi I bought a Toshiba Satellite M300 PSMD4L-01W004 in 2008 but only started using it regularly in 2009. The screen turns black like the light goes out when I open the display at more than a right angle...

the connector is the most obvious place to start,During the 90's this really was the achillies heel for most laptop manufacturer, this was probably in the top 5 complaint at repair shacks.
technology has made things somewhat better but some models still have faults in this area, that and the fact when dropped this the hinge area come under considerable stress/fractures

Screen flicker Problem (Acer travlemate 5730)

the wiring for the display goes through one of the hinges in the back .. if the wiring is pinched or damaged then that could cause your trouble .. there is usually a cover over the hinges that comes off .. you may be able to see the damage ..
