There should be a rescue and recovery part of your computer. To do this, turn on the computer and when the ThinkPad screen displays, press the blue rectangular ThinkVantage button in the upper left of your keyboard. This should bring you to the Rescue and Recovery applications which is stored on a hidden partition on your hard drive (and thus cannot be harmed by whatever destroyed the OS). From there, read the different options and you should find one that lets you restore your operating system that came with the computer.

If that doesn't work, go to Lenovo's web site and see if you can contact their support and ask for restoration CDs.

Good day, i have a laptop that i purchased with Ubuntu 12.04 pre-installed i now wish to change to win 8.1 but i dont know how to do it please assist, ive tried everything i could think of

My Suggestion would be to stick with Ubuntu. Windows 8.1 will be much slower on the same computer.

However, if you do really need Windows, my suggestion would be do run it under Ubuntu using VirtualBox (free) and then install the Extension pack which you can download from the Tools menu, when you have your OS running. This then gives you full screen. For your communications, make sure that your network adapter has been set to 'Bridged'

Hi i have a tm5800 compaq tablette i will like format the hard disk i dont hace cd reader how made to reinstalle windos xp? tanks

Win-to-Flash, a free program, turns a Windows XP cd into a bootable usb flash drive. You will need a USB drive and a Windows XP install CD.
http://wintoflash.com/home/en/
Next, on your laptop, enable booting to USB devices in the BIOS/Setup menu which can be accessed while your laptop is turning on.

When installed in Vista it shows up with only 34 GB

Is this a new Hard Drive ?
Was it previously used with some other OS ?

If it was used with some other OS previously than run a debug on the HDD from DOS Prompt by using a DOS Bootable CD / DVD. Than try installing Vista.

please edit through a dos bootable cd of windows 98. and it should have edit function on the cd. you can edit the boot.ini drive and modify the settings to boot from win xp32 bit by default, it must be second on the list.
if you cant succeed back up your important data from the drive and format the drive back up can be done by imaging softwares.

if you are installing a dos based system thn dos formatting is very good

if you are going to use xp then make boot option in setup as bootable from cd rom
put a win xp setup cd in the cdrom drive
it will boot up saying press any key to continue , and follow the scren instructions
the whole process is that simple a hd can be formatted till bad sectors are not shown up upto 8 %. more thna 8& bad sectors cannot load windows, however dos can still be loaded and so also win me so it doesnot affect the hd
what affects is the jerks and voltage supply variations on the har d disk and some bad virus infections and the temperature the hd has ... always leep hd at a tem p lower than 37 degres c
use a fan to achieve this a 12 volt small fan mounted on the hd .

Dell laptop with no cdrom and travelstar HDD

In this case you would have to...

1) preformat the drive

2) make it bootable in DOS

3) copy the CD contents to the drive

4) boot the target computer with the drive and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 directory to start the install.

*OR*

1) preformat the drive

2) copy the CD contents to the drive.

3) put the drive in the target computer and boot it from a DOS bootable floppy.

4) run WINNT.EXE in the I386 directory to start the install.

#1508 Bad directory buffer signature

Hi, if this is a fairly new installed XP you're probably better off: repartitioning, reformat and reinstall WinXP but this will delete all contents of the hard drive. If however there are a good number of critical/important files you would want to save/copy, there are two (2) ways of going about saving/copying those files but both involve access to a working computer. (1) remove your Travelstar 5K100 from the laptop and using a 44 to 40 pin adaptor, connect it to the working pc which should recognize it as another hd and therefore you can copy your files to that pc. There are many sites that explains how to do this. You can try Google search or http://search.techrepublic.com.com/search/laptop+hard+drive.html. (2) another method is to boot and run your OS from your cd. While this does not involve physically removing your laptop's hard disk, it might be a bit challenging preparing the bootable CD with an OS. The procedure is better explained at http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/. This will run your laptop although a bit slow however, you can access the hd and save it to a thumbdrive or if you have a lan to another computer. Please let me know if this works ok with you. Good luck and regards.
