I used my Dell Inspiron 1520 yesterday and tried to connect to another network. Now I have come back home, I cannot connect to the internet via my wireless connection and I get a no networks available message. I can now only connect to the ethernet via my ethernet cable. I spoke to my ISP and they troubleshooted, reset my netgear router settings which didn't help and then advised that I need a new wirless adaptor. I have only had my laptop for under 1 year and a half so am dissapointed that I have this problem. I need a second opinion before I fork out any money. Can you help?

Re: Wireless Adaptor Issue
First make sure that your wireless router is set to broadcast (or if you prefer not to broadcast) your SSID (your wireless network name) or that your laptop wireless network connection properties is set-up to "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting".
To check this go to:
Click Start> Connect to>Show all connections> Right click your Wireless Connection and select properties> On the Properties box select "Wireless Network" tab > Go to "Preferred networks" then highlight your SSID (network name) Click "properties" button check "connect even if this network is not broadcasting". (while youre here check that your "Wireless network key" confgurations are correct).
Make sure that you are also set-up to "Obtain an IP Address automatically " and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
Click Start> Connect to>Show all connections>
Right click your Wireless Connection and select properties> Select "General" and under the heading "This connection uses the following items"> Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click "Properties" button
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

you haven't inadvertantly pressed the keyboard key that urns wireless off have you? some older network cards are incompatible with the latest encryption so you could try setting the router up to use wep encryption 64bit instead
If you get a 'Limited connectivity" on you wirelessconnection on your laptop, it means that the wireless card on your laptopprobably did not get an IP address from the wireless router. To fix this problem, right click on the wireless icon on the Task bar and thenclick Repair. This will force the wireless router to issue a IP address to the wireless cardon the laptop.
In Device manager, under the network adaptor are you able to see wireless adaptor for your device. - see if it not marked as disable( Red Mark or Yellow Mark)
Also check in network connection wheather you Wireless connection is in Enable or Disable mode,
Try this, In the bottom right corner of your desktop, is there a little picture of a computer screen with a couple of "sound waves" coming off it? If so, right click on it and a menu box will open with the choices; Disable Status Repair View available wireless networks Change windows firewall settings Open network Connections
choose view available wireless networksThen look for the comcast network and connect to that. If Comcast isn't available on the list, you may have to choose and look in your LAN or high speed internet category to see if its listed there. If it is, right clik on it and choose
In Dell Inspiron 1520 Notebook, there is a switch on the left hand side of the laptop to
enable/ disable Wifi. Make sure that it is on and with wireless light activated - Press and hold Fn and press F2 (Fn+F2). This will enable the wi-fi and you will be able to detect and connect to a wi-fi network
Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.
GoodLuck! Dont forget to appreciate the solution if I could have been of any help! CreativeTECH
When you say "IP and DNS settings are correct", can you define what "correct" is? IP and DNS settings change depending on the wireless network they're using, so one setting will not work for all networks. The most "correct" setting you can have is probably DHCP - which is called "Obtain IP address automatically" and the same for DNS. If your laptop has any statically assigned IP information, make a note of what they are, and then change it to DHCP and see if you have better luck. If you have statically assigned IP information, it will allow you to connect to the wireless network, but not provide internet access because your IP scheme and DNS settings are wrong. It sounds like the scenario you're describing.
make sure that your wireless or wifi light is on,you may try to press Fn and F2 at the same time to enable or swith on wireless..if wifi is already on,try going to start >> control panel >> network connections,go to wireless network connection and double click it, it will give you a list of wireless network,or right click and then "view available wireless network", if you get an error that windows cannot configure wireless connection,go to start >> all programs >> loo for either dell wlan utility or intel pro wireless, by opening that app,it will also search for wireless network in range, just double click on the network name where you want to connect and you sould be connected provided that "wireless network" doesnt have encryption like wpa or wep key..if your connecting to your home network, you should have wireless router at home and wireless is enabled on the router.
