Question about Computers & Internet
A friend asked me to look at his Acer Aspire 5542 which would not do anything except charge the battery. All that happened when pressing the power button was the fan and blue light came on, no hard drive, screen or anything else worked. I checked the memory which was OK, tried an external monitor, nothing. So started taking it apart, got to the main board to find a bios backup battery type CR2032. On checking it, it only had about 1v instead of 3v. I changed it , plugged the hard drive on to the main board connector, connected the laptops battery on to the main board. Pressed the power on button, the lights lit up and the hard drive became active so reassembled everything and tried it again and everything worked fine. It appears that if the internal backup battery is flat then it will not do anything apart fromturn the fan on and light up the power button. There are plenty of sights on the net with disassembley instructions to get at the main board. Hope this helps someone else !!

Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.

If you are sure the computer is running then connect an external monitor to the laptop. You will have to select the external using your Function keys FN + F7 or F8. If you can now see your machine on the external monitor then you know it's the screen portion of your laptop that is faulty. If this does not work then the sounds you are hereing are probably just the fan and the hard drive spinning. These are not an indication that the computer is working. All in all, I would say that the laptop needs to see a pro.

You can try basic troubleshooting. Unplug the laptop, takeout the battery. With the laptop still unplugged, put the battery back in and power-on the laptop. If that doesn't work and you hear no beeping sounds, the motherboard maybe bad and needs replacing.
