If you are finding
water on the floor around or under your dishwasher, then here are some things for you to check to see what the problem may be. Some of the things that cause the leaks are easy to fix and others can be very complicated. Hopefully if you are reading this tip because of a leak that you have, it is one of the easy ones.
One of the easiest things to fix and also one of the most common problems is the
dishwasher door seal. The
door seal will go bad with age on many
dishwashers. It will get smashed down and crack or even deteriorate to the point where is no longer has any elasticity and there fore does not contact the door hard enough to keep the
water in the dishwasher. The water will often pool on the floor in the
front of the dishwasher, often near one of the corners.
To fix this, you simply need to find the
model of your dishwasher and order a new door seal for it. I describe how you can do that in this tip.
http://www.fixya.com/support/r3907570-buy_appliance_parts_onlineWhen you get the
new door seal, you can simply pull out the old seal from the channel in your dishwasher that holds it in. Soak the new seal in warm water to make it more pliable. Then carefully measure it out so that you will have the same
amount on each side of the dishwasher, then slowly work the new seal into the channel.
If the door does not contact the new seal fully, you make have to adjust the door a bit by loosening the screws that hold the door latch and adjusting it in just a bit.
Another place for
potential leaks is the
water inlet or solenoid valve. The valve usually will not leak, but the
hose connections or
water supply connections may leak over time. You may have to tighten them or repair them. If the valve its self sticks open, you will know what happened, because the water will flood out of the dishwasher and you will have a huge mess!!
The
hoses on the drain also can deteriorate and leak. The clamps that hold them in place also can rust and come loose. Repair or replace hoses and clamps as necessary.
Finally you have the
main seal for the tub. If you have a motor that sits in a vertical position, then you can replace the seals. To get to this seal you need to remove the lower rack, or even both racks to give you more room to work. Then remove the lower spray arm, the spray arm support, and the wash/drain impellers to get to the seal. When you get there you will need to use a small screw driver to pry out the old seal and then replace it. Return all the other stuff to its right places and you should be good to go.
Now if you have a
horizontal pump motor you will need to replace the whole assembly, because the seals are not field serviceable on those models. The whole pump and motor assembly will need to be replaced.
If you go through these things,
check and fix what is leaking you should have a dry floor again and be
happy in the kitchen again.
