SOURCE: When setting Tanita scales specifics, after set, I get an error

I had the same problem with the error message coming up and emailed Tanita. The regional representative contacted me by email. He had me check with new batteries and clean the contacts. Then he cross-referenced my model and lot numbers and said that my scale was still under warranty and if it met the warranty criteria would be replaced. Tanita has a 10 year warranty on this scale and my scale was 5 years old. He gave me an RMA# to submit with my receipt and about 10 days later I had my replacement scale!! Fantastic Customer Service! Thank you Tanita!!!

SOURCE: My Tanita BC-542 when turned on shows88888

Check out this options.:-------- "Error" appears while measuring. Please stand on the platform keeping movement to a minimum. The unit cannot accurately measure your weight if it detects movement. The Body Fat Percentage is more than 75%, readings cannot be obtained from the unit.
Your personal data has not been programmed. Try re-programming. Make sure socks or stockings are removed, and the soles of your feet are clean and properly aligned with the guides on the measuring platform.Otherwise it shows error. ------------------------------ 1. Select Personal Key and Step On Press your pre-programmed Personal key. (Release the key within 3 seconds or the display will show "Error".) The unit will beep and the display will show the programed date. The unit will beep again and the display will show "0.0"/ "88888". Now step onto the platform. If you step onto the platform before "0.0" / "88888"appears the display will show "Error" and Note: you will not obtain a reading. Furthermore, if you do not step onto the measuring platform within about 60 seconds after "0.0"/ "88888" appears, the power is shut-off automatically. ---------------------------- If any of the above mentioned options are incorrect then monitor will display error. This should help.Thanks.Helpmech. ------------

Error code r5 on Tanita BF-350

Just spoke with Tanita Tech support- r5 indicates if the scale is in PC mode (able to receive data from scale). There is a button sequence to toggle between PC mode and stand-alone mode.

1. Press&Hold Zero button, then Press&Hold On/Off.
2. Release.
3. Arrow buttons toggle between PC mode and Stand-Alone, select which mode you would like.
4. Press Set button to select mode.

Hope this helps!

Hello, my new device Tanita BC 532 measure weight and body fat%, but no reaction when I try to press rest of the featured keys. I use the description attached, and the weigth and fat% showes alternly on...

My Tanita BC-532 also developed this fault. It seems to be common with a number of the models! I asked Tanita and over a number of emails this is what they said:

"not to place it in wet rooms and remove the batteries if stored for a longer time period."

When I said it was in a bathroom (isn't that where everyone keeps their scales) NOT a wet room - they said any bathroom is classed as a wetroom!
When I said how can you tell if the batteries are just about to run out (that's what seems to trigger the fault) I had no reply; and when I asked how long is a "long period of time" - 2 weeks/ 2 months (we used to use ours every 1-2 weeks) again no reply to this question.

Now out of warranty after 5 years Tanita suggested it I didn't follow either of these instructions above (in the manual, but not defined) then I only have myself to blame. They did suggest one remedy was to:

"1.Take out the batteries.

2.Make a short-circuit between (+) and (-)with a piece of wire.

3.Put the batteries back and try it out.

If that doesn't work, you simply have to discard it. "

Personally I don't think this is satisfactory and I won't buy Tanita again. Scales should last much longer. They should make any warnings clearly defined - especially based on the number of times this happens according to reports from users on internet.

It seems this is a well known fault and I would thus suggest scales are not fit for purpose over longer term. Tanita should own up to this and stop avoiding their responsibilities.

Should you not keep in the bathroom, use every few days, and replace batteries before they get too low - then these scales are great (well they were for the first 5 years!)
