Question about Office Equipment & Supplies
Can I get my printer to only use the black ink??
I don't want to use the colour and why should I have to replace cartridges I don't want to use, Just so I can print in black again, when my black has just been replaced??
Hallow ,,,if your lookin to just print black and white so .while printing ,go the printing properties or prefrencies ,,in the colour option click just use black and white

By trial and error, I discovered this works GREAT for me! I print true highly detailed Black and White [grayscale] Infrared prints of fine arts quality photos using Adobe elements 6.0 and PhotoShop using an Epson Stylus 1400.
Make sure your software's photo mode = grayscale.
TO GET A TRUE B&W PRINT...
1. Select either Best Photo or just Photo
2. Set paper size
3. Select plain white paper [even for Sup Glossy & Glossy]
4. GO TO ADVANCED OPTIONS
5. Select Color Management
6. Select either 1.5 or 1.8 GAMMA [I prefer 1.5]
UNDER PAPER AND QUALITY
Plain Bright White [even for glossy/super glossy]
Quality = FINE q
Select High Speed
[Print preview is handy]
If PLAIN BRIGHT WHITE PAPER is not selected regardless of the finish of paper used, the print will have a distinct tincture of deep purple. Using glossy in this Plain Paper mode yields great true FA quality B&W prints...no purple!!!
Hope it works well for you.

SOURCE: colour printing
Check the following thread, it might apply to your problem. and just as a printer can be fooled to show a low level ink, I guess it can happen the other way around. http://www.fixya.com/problems-solutions/t103191,p342983/Epson-Stylus-Photo-R300-InkJet-Printer.aspx Good luck

I will explain you the cause for it.
It prints in yellow first and then override with black for better quality. This is the reason your color ink gets empty.
Have a great day!

Yup that's Epson for you. I had the same. bought the black one but to get it to work you must have ALL the ink cartridges full. no way around it.

Neither solution will help, Brother has had some bad printheads and the only repair is to install a new printhead. It's a shop repair and runs around $170.00. Under warranty there's no charge. The thing you really don't want to do is blow air into the system as it takes another full ink to get the air bubbles out. Sorry for the Stupid help above.
