Question about Lenovo ThinkPad R400 Notebook
Works on external monitor with docking station
Sounds like you have a faulty ribbon cable or the ribbon cable it needs re-attaching to the motherboard.

SOURCE: Missing Docking Station key
You will have to take the docking station apart until you can see the locking mechanism. Once you can see the mechanism, you should be able to get a screwdriver ron it and release it. Make sure that it releases, don't force it, and most of all, be patient.

6710b does not support DVI even though they never said so in the documentation, i'm betting that 6715b does not either. I'm pretty bummed about it. My nc6400 worked great, just switched to the 6710 and my dual monitors would not work, with a little research i found that the DVI on the docking station, simply is not supported. No matter what your monitor configuration is...Ctrl+Alt+Del to you too HP!

Take a look at the function key combinations which toggle the display from the laptop alone, to the display with the monitor and the laptop, and the external monitor alone.
In those combinations, you should find one particular set which gives the key combinations for laptop alone, laptop and external together, and laptop off with external on. It sounds as if you have toggled the last of those three combinations. I do not use an HP laptop, so I cannot tell you which keys are the display control keys on an HP.
On my laptop, they are F5, F6, and F7. My suggestion is to look at your F Keys, to find which ones control the external output, and go from there until you discover the combinations which will contribute to displaying back to your laptop's screen alone.
