My battery dies very quickly

If your notebook unexpectedly goes into Sleep mode while you are using it but the battery charge is not low, you may need to recalibrate your battery. You should also recalibrate the battery periodically to maintain the accuracy of the battery gauge. Follow these steps to recalibrate the battery.

  1. Connect your notebook to AC power and let the battery charge completely.
  2. Disconnect the AC power and restart your notebook.
  3. Completely discharge the battery.
  4. After the battery is completely drained, reconnect your notebook to AC power.
  5. Charge the battery completely until the battery status indicator turns blue.

All batteries have a limited number of load cycles, so if your battery/laptop is older or has been used intensively, this could happen.
You can try draining it completely, and then loading it completely, but it will probably not recover completely.
Make sure to save power when running on battery with laptops to maximize the battery life.

My gateway MX6450 keeps shutting down in the middle of what I am doing -

Check the batteries are working and the AC adapter is properly connected and operating.

Also, check that you're not accidentally activating the PC shutdown function. A magnet or an iron bracelet brushing against the Reed sensor hidden near the touchpad may be enough to trigger a shutdown. The mechanical pins hidden near the hinges, in those notebooks using mechanical triggers, may also be stuck or defective. In this case a gentle finger rap near the pin area would consistently trigger a shutdown.

Finally, run a complete system scan with an antivirus - some infestations could have the effect of provoking a shutdown.

Purchased new battery, now NOTEBOOK won't work on battery after full charge

Better you first charge the battery for 16 to 17 hours and recheck the same. If problem persists, change the battery from where you bought it. that battery is faulty. And yes there is no need to install the battery from device manager. Just open the battery compartment and replace the battery with new one.
