I own a Dyson asthma and allergy machine. Works okay, but definitely not as well as when I first got it. I have cleaned my filter on a regular basis which helps slightly with suction. As I was cleaning my machine today from top to bottom in an effort to figure out the problem, I noticed there are six holes in the top of the cylcone chamber of which 4 were plugged with what seems to be balls of hair! I have tried everything from rinsing with water to unscrewing the machine in an effort to get this **** out. The screws are apparently for looks or just to throw you frustration level into high gear. Is there anyway to get into this chamber and clean my machine for good?
I had these same issues. It came down to my husband beating the **** out of it several times. He'd take the canister apart, pound it on the ground, use a hair dryer to blow out as much as we could, a hanger down the top to pull out any hair we could grab. Then I'd use it -- it definitely loosened up some stuff. He'd pounded on it again and more stuff came loose. Don't know if it's fixed, but it's got it's suction back. Now I have have hose suction issues.
It felt good to beat on it a bit.....
Broke down and took it in for repair. Service folks aren't even supposed to take the vortex assembly apart. They told me it was a known defect and warranty issue. Of course mine is out of warranty but it only cost me $75 to get a whole new vortex and canister part.
Check out http://www.aaavacs.com/. He's very knowledgeable on Dyson's and may be able to help.

I had similar problem and have just posted a solution on another question. Check the hotlink under my user name or search under dyson hair filter (the problems with the hair inside the vortext eventually lead the filter to keep getting clogged.

I have the same problem.
Everything else is clear (i.e., hoses, etc.) but cyclone is plugged.
I basically I have no suction at beater bar due to this.
I personally think this machine is a waste of money and difficult to work on (and yes - I've had to work on this $500 piece of plastic in it's short life thus far).
I have Clogged vortex holes on my DC17 anybody has a resolution how to Fix it???
Tank you.
