SOURCE: A hard disc error is preventing windows from

the hard drive should have diagnostics under the bios run on it..

get in the setup area right at the beginning on the starting process... like hit F2.. right away at boot up

see if there are built in diagnostics for testing your hard drive... this is usually the case

if not

get a copy of seagate or western digital diagnostics testing software and place the software correctly on a cd... boot from the cd... and execute the diagnostics on the hard drive in the laptop

this will determine if the drive is good or not

tell me the answer and we will solve the problem from there

SOURCE: Problem Event name: Startup Repair Offline

So will the computer boot or is Startup Repair hanging or looping and preventing the computer to boot successfully?

If you can't boot successfully you'll need a repair disc or operating system disc so that you can get to a command prompt (black screen with white writing) and run the check disk command.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command. If check disk does not solve the problem you will probably have to reinstall your operating system. Try to do a Repair Install so that it does not delete your data.

Travelmate will not load windows, ram works, battery and ac are in the right voltage area, moved the ram to second slot and get the same reaction , will load bios and contiue to load up to the windows...

Get a bootable disk, like one of the newer Norton Antivirus/Ghost/InternetSecurity cd or dvds. You could also get a BartPE disk from a friend. This way you can check for errors on your hard drive without removing it from the computer. If there are no errors, you might have some sort of virus that has corrupted a windows driver or your boot sector.

Problem after installing or updating software

Hi DonB7,

Operating system problems can happen in a wide variety of circumstances. Anything from a software bug to hardware failure may be causing the system failures you're encountering. I'd like to help but I'll need to ask some basic questions before I can perform any in-depth research.

Just as a note, before I ask my questions, I'd strongly recommend discussing this problem directly with the retail location that you have purchased the system from. There is a chance that the system's hardware itself has problems and if your return period is short - some retailers have return/exchange periods as short as 7-14 days - you may not have much time available for getting the system evaluated and replaced if necessary.

1) What applications have you installed recently?
2) Have you installed any security software recently?
3) What kind of updates have been applied recently?
4) How long have you owned the system?
5) How old is the system?
6) Have you performed any Dell hardware diagnostics? (hard drive, memory, etc)

With answers to these basic questions I should be able to do some research and, at the very least, provide some ideas. These questions may lead to more questions but if they do I hope we can find a solution. As I mentioned above, if the system is covered by a return/exchange policy with your retailer I would strongly recommend working with them ASAP as these return/exchange policies generally do not give much leeway on time.

Thanks!
