I am always told to clean terminal of xD card

Each time I put my xD card into my olympus camera, I am always told to clean the terminal of the xD card with dry cloth. This happened after I connected the xD card to my computer. After I have transfrred the pictures to my computer, I formatted the xD card. Then there appeared in the dialogue box that windows cannot format this type of disk.

A camera memory card should always be formatted IN the camera.
Do not format camera memory cards in a computer card reader.

If the card is formatted in the camera and after that the same error pops up,
you should replace the memory card and recheck.

Get an inexpensive card reader and use it to download your pics to your computer. Then, format the card in the camera to erase and initialize it. It should work properly then and your pics will be safely stored on your computer. typrice_129.jpg

OLYMPUS XD Card - CLEAN or FORMAT - and not reading in computer

Your 2gb xd card would be of the "M" or "H" designation, which is a new type of card which is not always compatible with many cameras and card readers. If the other cards that work are not H or M cards, that is most likely the problem

Olympus 2G xd M card with pictures - error message "clean card" or format

Just had the same issue today. The Olympus Helpdesk told me that the fact I had printed one of the picture from the Xd card in directly inserting the card in the printer slot for Xd created the problem....
The guy from the Helpdesk strongly recommended to transfer the pictures from the camera to the computer exclusively using the USB cable of the camera.
In the end I have saved all my 505 pictures in using the Smart Recovery from PC Inspector but why the hell this problem only happens with Xd cards?
