Switch the Printer OFF and ON again and wait for the initialization. If the Error code continues to appear, switch the Printer OFF. Remove the EIO Card (if installed) and make sure that the Hard Disk Drive is installed correctly by pushing it firmly inwards and checking that the two installation screws are completely tightened. Switch the Printer ON again. If the error codes 09Axxx or 09Bxxx appear then replace the Hard Disk Drive. If the Error Code disappeared after removing the EIO Card, then switch the Printer OFF and reinstall the EIO Card, making sure that the two installation screws are completely tightened. Switch the Printer ON again. If the Error Code reappears, then the EIO Card could be faulty. Replace the EIO Card. If Error Code 09Cxxx appears after initialization, then replace the Electronics Module. Once the Error Code has been solved, print an Internal Demo Print to make sure that the Hard Disk Drive is functioning correctly. If the Error Code reappears, then use the above information to troubleshoot the problem.

I think the problem is because mounting problem of the logical drive .In this case to access your data in the drive you just need a macbook hard drive recovery tool .Remove the drive from your pc install the drive in some other mac pc and start it in target mode .Install this recovery tool and start recovering files but save it in different healthy drive .I am suggesting this tool because it works good for my missing partition problem. But purchase the full version to get good results. The demo version link is here...
Which icons are disappearing and reappearing? If you're talking about the Dock (The quick-launch and management area at the bottom of the screen by default), that may have been set to hide it's self, only showing when the mouse is at the very bottom of the screen.
Other icons that come and go are ones that represent volumes such as external hard drives, memory sticks, network places, CDs/DVDs. What icons are being problematic?
Hope that helped, please clarify problems if not!

the problem sounds like you either lost the IDE channels on the MOBO or the chipset was updated with corrupt files.
run everest home and see if there are current updates for the northbridge chipset. if you have 2 ide channels on the board switch the primary and secondary ribbons and see if the hard drives are there. if your cdrom's are ide and after switching ribbon cables they disappear and the hard drives reappear your mobo lost an ide channel, you would need to replace the board.
Me too, i bought a LaCie BigDiskExtreme+ (1tb) and it keeps giving me Device removal error. I'm running Mac OSX Leopard. Worked for 5 minutes, now everytime it turn it on it goes away and comes back up, always giving me the error message. Any advice ?
