The manual is pretty clear. Network setup depends on the network. At a minimum, your ISP uses DHCP or PPPoE. DSL's tend to be the latter and Cable modems the former.

Cable modems tend to be easier in that you plug in router and run the ethernet to the WAN port, and plug your computer into the LAN port. The wizard will start and you customize it from there, accepting most of the defaults.

I cIan take a Netgear router out of the box, plug it in, and get a wireless connection to it.

Is that what you did, or did you possibly set up the router first?

Connected wireless to router, excellent signal, but unable to connect to internet.

connected to wireless router with excellent signal may not means you are connected to internet. make sure your modem provided by internet service provider has signal! connect your computer to modem directly bypassing router. If you are online that means your internet is functional. Then connect modem to your Linksys router and use your wireless to log on to internet.
Your router wireless signal active and excellent means you are connected to router not necessarily the internet. The modem supplied by your internet service provider with active internet should be connected to you router on WAN port!
good luck!!

My computers stopped detecting the wireless network. The wireless router used to work fine with all my computers, but today it stopped. I am unable to connect online via wireless, but if i plug cables...

Power cycle all devices. that should do the trick. You may also want to get to the User Interface of the router to check if the router radio has been turned off by accident or the wireless detection has been stopped by accident.

Wireless router will not connect to my modem

Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem. If your computer is not able to go online through the modem then you will need to call ISP first. If your computer is able to go online through the modem then you need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router. open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

No internet connection

When connecting the devices make sure that you turn on the device in this manner: modem (wait for the lights to be solid) then router, then the computer.

Check if you can get online, if not then follow the steps below:

1. Open a web browser and type this in the address bar: 192.168.1.1

2. Then you will be in the setup page of the router. You need to know what is your connection type obtained from your ISP.

If DHCP, internet connection type should be: Automatic Configuration - DHCP should be selected.

If PPPoE, select PPPoE and type the username and password provided by your ISP.

3. Then save the changes.

Once that the internet connection is working from the PC hardwired connected to the router, then check the wireless settings under the wireless tab. Take note of the SSID, wide channel, and the wireless security and preshared key.

Put those settings on the wireless adapter of the laptop and you should be able to get online.

I hope this works! Good luck!

Wireless router WRT54G version 2

To setup your router
first check..
Connect the Broadband modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable without the router installed and make sure that the Internet connection is active. If it is not, contact your Internet Service Provider. If it can go online,
to setup connection..
Step 1:
Connect the Broadband modem to the router’s WAN or Internet port.
Step 2:
Connect the computer to any available numbered port (1, 2, 3 or 4).
NOTE: In this example, we’ll connect the computer to port number 3.
Step 3:
Make sure the power adapter is plugged to an available power outlet.
Step 4:
check if you are able to go online wired..
if not your router has to be configured first,
to config your router i need some more information
your internet service providers (isp)name , and how many computers do u have totally..
let me no know in case if you have any problems ...
