Breville 800ESXL thermoblock won't stay hot, short, wimpy steam cycle

This is my second of this model, the first experienced a similar problem and was replaced under warranty. Basically, the steam wand will only generate steam for 5-10 seconds, then reverts to squirts of water with each pump. Similarly, brewing an espresso will work fine, but brewing a second or third will result in cold water coming through the brew head. Even when restarting the steam cycle, it doesn't reheat the thermoblock even though the heating light comes on, and continues to spit cold water with each pump. I have to unplug the machine to reset it in order to the first hot shot out of the machine. I disassembled the thermoblock and found some calcification, but not a huge amount. The pump moves water through the wand and brew head quickly, it just doesn't keep the stream hot. What would explain the thermoblock heating properly, then not staying hot?

SOURCE: Steam from brew head, but no water

Hi,

  1. If you take the coffee filter and head it in light, can you see a little hole in the middle? if not, try to clean it else you have to replace it.
  2. Can you brew out water without the filter holder in the machine? If not, loosen the screw in the middle on the machine where the filterholder shall be and take of the filter. Clean the filter and put it on the machine again.
Hope this help you

SOURCE: Water not coming through espresso side although steam wand works fine

you both can have same problem, solution is:

  1. low pressure of pump (or too fone grinded coffee)
  2. security valve of boiler openes to early and dont let the pump to rise pressure enough for good brewing( if it is this you can see water returning back to container if you have 2nd pipe in your machines reservoir)

SOURCE: Gaggia baby espresso machine-Steam button is stuck

The only thing that comes to mind is that the machine is in steam/hot water mode. Unless you replace the switch and turn off the steam light so that it sends the water to the correct location. Also you might want to remove the shower screen and make sure it is clean.

My expresso machine won't steam. Just suddenly stopped. Have tried running vinegar through system, but still won't run through steamer.

Hi, I dont know which brand machine you have, but I should be able to work out what is wrong. If your machine has a press button or turn knob steam tap, then it could be the solenoid which opens the steam flow. The solenoid itself maybe stuck or the coil maybe faulty. You just need to work back from the steam arm to work out which solenoid it is. It should make a clicking sound when activated. Commercial machine solenoids canbe disassembled and cleaned. If its a domestic machine, then just replace the solenoid. Also, some machines have a micro switch that activates the steam valve. If its faulty, then replace it.
If its a domestic machine you have, then another thing that maybe at fault, and that is the thermoblock (small boiler). If it doesn't heat up then no steam canbe made. The thermoblock has an element inside, and they can not be replaced. You have to replace the whole thermoblock. It can be easily checked with a multi meter to see if the circuit is broken. On some thermoblocks, is a thermostat or overload sensor. It is also easily checked with a meter.
So lets break it down a) solenid
b) micro switch
c) Thermoblock
d) thermostat/ thermol overload
Hope this has help you. Id be looking towards the thermoblock. Dazza

Die Cast 800ESXL Espresso Machine: Breville 800 EXL espresso machine pump not working...

I have the same problem. I used my machine for one day to test it when I had it brought into Vietnam then packed it while our house was being built.
Now it won't pump water or produce steam.

Breville espresso machine 800 ES

I have the same problem. It appears to be caused by a worn steam wand gasket that's inside the steam wand assembly which can be unscrewed from the Breville machine. This was confirmed by the folks at Breville. They referred me to www.thegourmetdepotco.com. That website does not sell the steam wand gasket separately. They sell "Frother Assembly MOdel #800ESXL-250" for $14.95. With tax ($1.42) and shipping via USPS ($5.65), the total is $22.02. A very high price for the failure of a simple plastic washer, but it beats buying a new machine!

FixmeBob Great help with Breville 800esxl

I had a similar problem, but no blinking light, only cold coffee. I tapped on the relay (black box on circuit board) and violá.  Red light, hot coffee, and happiness.  The machine did the same thing a couple of weeks after the "fix", and a good slap to the left side, and I was back in business.  My guess is that your switch is bad or sticking.  Good luck.

Makes espresso, coffee, water, but will not steam

The pump has gone bad - through use. This is a common problem, and has to do with the "seals" that are in the pump. Since the pump generates high pressure and heat, over time, the seals will fail, and will be unable to generate enough pressure and heat to create steam. The only remedy is to have the pump replaced through the Breville Out of Warranty repair centers.
