On other laptops, you need just to access to a door at the bottom to replace the fan.

On a gateway, you remove keyboard, aking case not to break the mosepad and keyboard ribbon cable.

To remove Keyboard see SOLO 5300 5350 REMOVE REPLACE KEYBOARD.pdf

Then undo screws at the bottom, then pull up upper casing, then remove fan cover plate, unscrew fan and replace it.

You find more manuals here.

Hi
Opening Underside Panel

1) Disconnect all power souces to the notebook. (Battery(s) & AC Power)

2) Close the notebook if you havent so, then flip it over so that the bottom is facing you,
3) Using the screwdriver, remove the 11 screws enclosed by a red box as above.

4) There is a little imprint/dent that allows you to slip your fingernails under to lift the panel up. Lift the panel up gently (at an angle), it should come off easily.

Once the panel is off, this is what you'll see:

    ANY DOUBT?

    1. Take your 8 Tiger Elastic Fixations and
stick them into the holes of the two fans. Stick them in the holes on
the side where the air gets blown out. This usually is the side where
the label of the fan is attached to. The output of this operation
      should look like below.

    2. Now
press the fans with the Tiger Elastic Fixation on the aluminum heat
sink. You must place the two fans close to each other and align them
with the case of the harddrive bay. If you close the case of your MDD
the fans should inherit the place of the second harddrive. You should
ensure that the two fans don't touch each other because that could
cause vibrations what again causes a disturbing sound.

    3. If the fans are in the right place connect the the wires of the fan to the Y-molex cable.

    4. Connect the end of the Y-molex cable to the male connector of the 5.25" -> molex adapter

    5. Connect the 5.25" connector to the second 5.25" connector from the harddrive cabling.

    6. Put the spiral bound arount the cables.

    7. Put the cables in such a way so that the don't get damaged if you close the case.

    8. Close the door of your MDD. If you placed your fans correctly there should be no resistance.

    9. Start
your MDD and check if the fans are running properly by opening the door
again. You will notice that (even) if the door is open the CPU fan
won't accelerate. It definitely would if you hadn't the two fans placed
      on the heatsink.

You should check that there is no metal
wire that touches the metal case of your MDD. Unless you create the
wires for this modification yourself this is not really a problem since
the bought cables are all properly isolated

The CPU heatsink and fan combo is right under the keyboard. Remove the keyboard and status board. A number of screws must be removed to enable removal of the heatsink/fan combo/assembly plus the fan's cable.

Hope this helps.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my understanding, a Gateway Solo 5300 is nearly identical in terms of physical/mechanical construction to a 9300. Assembly and dis-assembly for a 9300 maybe found here with detailed step by step procedures and illustrations.

Check and perform preliminary visual or necessary inspection. Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The guts of a laptop are crammed into such a small, cramped space, that the cooling fan is absolutely critical. A replacement laptop fan and heat pipe should cost well under $50, you may even get by with a generic fan replacement for a few bucks, but the job is fairly involved and differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. I don't get excited about noisy laptop fans, I had one in my Toshiba Satellite that got noisy within a year of my buying it and continued noisy for the next four years without failing. On the other hand, you don't want to wait until you get heat damage to replace the fan. If the fan gets increasingly noisy over time or starts noisy (and slow) then quiets down as it picks up speed, I'd replace it at the first opportunity. Assuming you've owned the notebook for a while, you should be familiar with how long the fan usually takes to come on and how long it runs. If the fan never comes on, unless you're working in a freezer, it's probably dead. I just did a page on troubleshooting laptop CPU overheating problems and inspecting the laptop fan for linting or failure.

Wireless switch on model solo 5300

Hi. Not enough information. Do you want a switch? Do you need to FIND a switch? Is it a Gateway notebook?
The specifications for the Gateway Solo 5300 do not indicate a wireless system as part of the original unit.
See:
http://support.gateway.com/s/manlib/Notebooks/Solo5300/8508144/8508144.htm

Most units with PC100 memory (like this one) did not come with wireless. You will likely need a wireless PCMCIA card.
