Dell Dimension 3100 e10 ...usb won't work

My mouse AND keyboard are both usb and the ports on the machine quit working.... hard drive is fine. The machine boots up to the log in screen but I can't make anything move.... keyboard OR mouse. Any suggestions short of buying a new board?

I've tried using all ports (front and back) but nothing has worked. I"ll try using just the keyboard alone as suggested.... get back to ya with more details. I was hoping for a quick fix but it's pointing toward a new board more and more. Can get one cheaper on Ebay.

Nothing respond to the USB ports.... have tried other mouse and keyboard. Frustrating but good learning experiance (that's looking on the bright side of things, eh?)

I have the same problem with the USB keyboard and mouse not working. I removed and reinserted the clock battery and still could not get the keyboard and mouse to work. I am wondering if I have to replace the clock battery with a new one.

Dell Dimension E520. USB mouse and keyboard just quit working. Reboot brings up windows just fine, but there is the mouse arrow frozen in the middle of the screen. Nothing responds, even on the boot up. HELP!!

I have same problem but since there are multiple users set up on the PC, it boots as far as the xp login screen and just sits there. No USB recognition. Don't have PS/2 ports, unfortunately. Looks like a Dell problem with no easy fix.

Keyboard does respond in initial boot up - I have also tried the front usb ports so I think it has to be a Windows issue. No ps2 ports so a bit stumped now - tried restore to last known good configuration but no joy(does this EVER work??).
    Any more ideas please?

Does the system respond to boot keys (F2, F12) when the DELL logo appears? If so the problem is with Windows drivers and probably can be resolved by reinstalling or rolling back the drivers, but how? Do you have access to another keyboard? Does the system have PS/2 ports? Do you have access to a PS/2 keyboard or adapter? If boot keys work, you could also choose F8 for Last Known Good Config (XP) or System Restore (Vista).

Have you tried different ports (front if using back or visa-versa)?
Try using just keyboard or mouse to see if one has somehow shorted. Also check the ports for any sign of damage.

I have a dell dimension 5150. I was attempting to upgrade drivers, and appear to have lost use of keyboard and mouse usb ports. As I cannot do anything on computer without one or other, its impossible to...

Are your devices wired or wirelss ? Have you tried another usb keyboard ? You could try booting up the machine, then switching the devices to another usb port and hope windows will reconize them. Last resort would be getting a real PS/2 keyboard at thrift store or if your really stuck, boot with a live-CD then you should have mouse and keyboard to try to copy drivers manually over to the windows folder.

New keyboard and mouse set only works plugged into usb ports

You could purchase a 4 port usb hub for less than $30. Leave the keyboard & mouse where they are & use the hub for your other devices. This is probably the easiest option. Hope this helps.

My mouse pointer is stuck on my log in screen

If it is a usb mouse you could try using a usb to ps/2 converter some machines will not support usb mice and keyboards.

1 USB Port Failure

Hi Guys

Unfortunately after looking at the computer installation details i was at fault, although i have had
the computer for well over 2 years and this is the first time it has happened.
My Dell Dimension 5150 has 7 USB ports 5 at the back and 2 in the front and it appears that i have
connected the keyboard and mouse to the wrong ports.
There are two ports at the bottom allocated for the keyboard and mouse and for some reason i had
them in the top three ports hence my problem but still not sure why it happened.
Anyway my Dell Dimension 5150 is now running OK and no further help is needed.

Many Thanks.
