SOURCE: we have a craftsman snowthrower

Sounds like it has a broken spring on the starter.

Starter spins but why doesn't it engage?

There is a piece on the end of the starter called a bendix and it runs on a helix shaft. When you turn the key, the starter spins and the inertia force the bendix down the helix to engage the flywheel and spin the motor. yours is stuck. On old trick was to bang the starter housing with the shaft of a hammer to jolt the bendix into movement. Best way though is to remove the starter and clean and lubricate everything.

If you have a pre-engaged starter, it looks like this and the solenoid isn't working.

Not sure if your tractor uses new or old technology, but you have both explanations?

Engine starter spins and will not start motor somethines.

Remove the engine cover to expose the starter motor (or take the starter off). Lubricate the starter bendix, its the gear atop the starter motor shaft, use Marvel Mystery oil and then work the bendix a bit and it should fix it. If the teeth on the bendix or flywheel are damaged obviously that is where the problem lies.

Starter needs fix

You did not mention the model or make..but most have a simple starting system..the starter ususally is located on the side of the engine facing up for the vertical shaft or front or back for horizontal shafts..two mounting bolts and one or two wires from switch and battery...easy to remove and replace...if you are saying spinning not engaging it is the replaceable spring loaded flywheel engage gearing on the top of the starter...the third would be bad but replaceabke selonoid that transfers the battery voyage to the starter ..just follow the starter sure back it originates at the selonoid...good luck.

Teeth on starter gear worn down will not engage engine gear shaft

Here is your response in under 180 seconds.

This is a simple fix. I have done it several times with simple tools commonly found in the home tool box (open end wrench and/or socket set). You don't mention the make of engine ... You will have to remove the starter and replace the gear. Had you provided the engine make, I would have provided you with a link for the parts.

I suggest you take the gear and the model number of your engine to the small engine repair place in your town that carries your brand engine. If they don't have the gear on the shelf, they can get it for you in a very short time.

Thanks for your question @
