Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

Heil sp80 heater wont turn off. The ignitor is not turning on as to its not heating up. What would cause this problem?

The heater wont quit running. Its just blowing cold air and ignitor seems to not be working Or atleast its not heating up to try and ignite. I tried to see if it was still pushing the gas and ignite it manually and there is no gas coming through either. There is fuel in the tank. just to cover that base. What could be the problem and potential fix.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I stopped at a heating and cooling shop in town today and talked to one of the service reps there. It turned out to be that it had over heated and tripped the limiter. I just pushed the reset button on it cuz i have a manual limiter and it started up without a problem. I also changed the filter cuz well it wasnt pretty. the cause for the overheating im guessing.

SOURCE: does not heat

There is NO starter on a gas dryer burner assembly. The burner is controlled by gas valve coils and a glow bar igniter. Once the igniter reaches the appropriate current level, the gas valves open and you have ignition. The common problem is a weak igniter. You need to do a current measurement to make sure the igniter is within tolerance. If it is within specs, then I would agree with docjohn174 about replacing the coils. If its not within specs, you need to replace the igniter. Depending on the type of igniter you have, the current rating is as follows:

TWO BASIC IGNITER TYPES:

Carborundum (Cylindrical in shape) – needs to produce 2.5 to 3.0 amps for the gas safety valve to work.
Norton (Rectangular in shape) – needs to produce 3.2 to 3.7 amps for the gas safety valve to work.

NOTE: There is a UNIVERSAL FLAT BAR igniter on the market as well, that can be used as a substitute if the igniter type that came with your range is not available.

I still need an accurate model number in order to confirm WHICH type of igniter you have.

My guess is the ignitor needs replacing (old and has built up too much internal resistance). Even though it still works at times, I would suspect it first, even if it glows during an ignition cycle.

If you suspect its the ignitor? The hot surface ignitor is powered by 120v. Inspect ignitors' hot surface for cracks or burnt spots. Uplug ignitor from board. Cycle heat on and verify 120v to the ignitor at the cannon plug on the board where the ignitor plugs in. If you have the voltage then replace the ignitor. If not, you'll need to verify all other circuits are working before condemning the board. Work safe and at your own risk! Hope this helps!

Heil heater keeps turning on and then shutting right off. Reset interior and exterior breakers to no avail. When the unit will kick on heat does come from vents

How long do burners stay on? If they go out within a few seconds, the flame sensor may need to be cleaned. The control board you have shown is probably doing it's job by shutting down and something else is causing this. Always check your air filter first. More info needed.

Heater keeps turning on & off but no heat

What type of heater are we talking about? if its the home furnance, it sounds like the ignitor is coming on and shutting back down, the heat comes on ignite and the blower comes on like normal, then after a few minutes it will shut down, you will have to remove the ignitor, clean it with a little piece of sand paper to remove the carbon build-up, replace the ignitor and turn the furnance back on, this should correct the problem.

Fan on, sparks 3 times, won't run

Shut off the gas to the heater and pull the ignitor out. Turn everything on and push the button in the door opening to get the heater to turn on. Look at the ignitor and see if there is spark across the probes when you hear the clicking. If not, replace the ignitor.

If there is, put the ignitor back in the heater and then look at the valve. The two wires that bring the 115V to the valve need to be pulled and then checked with a meter. Start up the heater again and look for the 115VAC when the ignitor starts sparking. If you see it, replace the valve. If not, replace the control board.

Coleman evcon dgat090bdd. New ignitor won't heat up.

Looks like 4 flashes might be high limit fault on this furnace. (I don't have a manual for this furnace, just searched online for the code meaning) Is the unit running flame at all? Is the unit running flame for a while then shutting flame off before desired temp is reached? Does the main air fan turn on to circulate air through your diffusers? Does it feel like the unit has much air flow out of the diffusers if the fan is running? Is your air filter clean? If it is infact your high limit switch, it is usually caused by not having enough airflow through the furnace and overheating occurs.

Hope this helped, let me know if I can assist you further :)
