SOURCE: Dryer won't stay going after button is released

This is what is probably going on. There are two parts in the motor that cause the drum to rotate.
One of them is "start" winding. It literally starts the drum's rotation. Once the drum motor has started the drum to move. The second portion of the motor, known as the "run" winding takes over and keeps the drum turning. When the Drum winding burns out. The same symptom is caused when the switch attached to the motor is also damaged. In your case, although this is rare. I think it may be the switch.
The reason being is that the motor has a combination switch that also connects one side to the heating element. In a nutshell, If you get the dryer not continuing to turn AND the heating element stays on. There is a problem with the switch.
If you get the heating element going on when you push the start button but turns off when you release the button. The problem is the motor having a burned out run winding. Either way, it is less labor intensive to replace the motor when you take it out. Doing it switch is not easy. Hope this helps. If not write back to me and we can continue.
Best, Mark

Does the maytag dryer have a reset button. The dryer was working fine then just stopped turning on.

No, they typically don't have a reset button. But they do have safety switches which can fail. Usually there is a microswitch on the door. When the door is open the dryer won't start. Do you have power at all to the dryer? Do any lights light up? If not, you may have tripped your circuit breaker to the dryer and need to reset them. Typically there will be two breaker switches tied together to move as one in your power panel for your house or apartment. If you are not sure the breaker has tripped, it won't hurt anything to switch them off and then back on again. If this does not help, you likely have a failed switch or relay in the dryer that will need to be replaced. Also check that your lint trap does not have a switch which will prevent to dryer from running if you have too much lint in it.

Reset button

Hi Patti,

I saw your problem above for the first time just now. Not knowing what was going on before I can say that you might want to look at the door switch.

Most dryers that I have seen will not allow the drum to start or continue to spin if the door is open. This is a safety feature nearly every dryer (or washer for that matter) employs. If the switch (or associated wiring or circuitry) fails to send or detect the signal that indicates the door has not been closed, it will not start.

I hope this helps & good luck!

My kenmore dryer will only run if i hold down on the start button. this has happened to me before but i cannot remember the steps to take inorder for it to reset.

first check the door safety switch,, if its bad the dryer won't run,, if that checks out ok, its time for a new switch for the start button, to check these, and do the door switch first, unplug the door safety switch and place a jumper wire between the 2 wires leading to the switch, try starting the machine making sure your away from any moving parts , if this works, replace the switch, if it stays the same, do this same procedure to the switch for the start button

I have a whirlpool electric dryer. There is a chain coming out around the inside of the back area of the dryer. It has come out about 12 inches. What is that part and is it fixable?

ive never heard of a chain drive dryer cept commercial dryers use a chain drive your chain is most likely a safety chain that was once hooked to the wall its perpose was if a child opened the door and leaned or sat on the door the dryer would not tip over they use safety chains on ranges for the same reason hope this helps

Press start button and dryer will start and stop , if you press start button again nothing happens , if you unplug dryer and plug back in it will try to start again and stop

Howdy: The motor could be popping it's breaker once the start button is pushed. When unpluged the motor resets and the cycle starts over. But also the dryer thinks the element is too hot and resets the safety switch. The temp thermistor (overtemp sensor) could be clogged with lint or open circuit. Not easy to diagnost. Do you smell burnt wires or lint? Check to be sure the door is completely closed. It may think the door is open and not start. Doug

Hard to answer as I cannot see diagram for the dryer. First off would check the door switch as it could be opening contacts due to vibration. Second could be Hi heat thermostat taking dryer out and after it cools will restart with touching of the start switch. To find if it is Hi heat thermostat, turn dryer on, when it stops open door and see if it is extremely hot inside. If so your control thermostat is probably not working correctly and your last safety thermostat is stopping the dryer. This could be a very unsafe condition as the lint etc. in dryer could catch on fire.
