If you upgrade to a genuine verson of XP from a pirated one, it will be okay. The harddrive [shouldn't] reject the software.

Mine hitachi hard disk is 80GB SATA i cant able to install OS because it is showing error some virus found and u r not able to formate this. first when i put OS CD in drive it will install some files and...

The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

I have a lacie had drive that i've been using on my mac. My mac died and I bought a PC instead. How can I retrieve the data I stored on my Lacie?

The easiest way that I know is to purchase a program called MacDrive from

This will let your PC (Windows XP, Vista or Windows7) read the mac formatted HD directly

They do have a trial version, so you can make sure it'll work for your HD before you pay for it.

HP laptop ? defective hard drive

when you turn your laptop on your HD should start to spin and you should be able to hear and feel it do so, and yes they are very easy to replace, but keep in mind IF you have a bad HD and you replace it you will need to reinstall your OS (operating system ie.. xp, vista, w7) and in most cases with a bad HD all your info on that drive is lost, hope you backed up your files on a separate drive, and to replace the drive just turn the laptop over and remove the back plate to the HD and get the info from that, most important is the way it connects to the motherboard, there are a few types yours being 3 or so years old im going to guess its IDE, but it could also be SATA, looking at the specs on the drive will tell you what it is, size as in GB is your call you can go as big as you want from 80GB to 500GB that is user preference, in my own opinion Seagate HD's are really good, but there are several companies out there to choose from... hope this helped

I am replacing my hard disc on a Fujitsu Siemens T4215 / windows XP Pro SP3. the replacement disc is a Seagate Momentus 7200.4. Could you give me a procedure on what to do: 1. Before the replacement 2....

hi md-consult,

from your request I presume you never have done any hardware replacement before...this may take awhile and I guess you will help if you give me more data:

First of all:

- if you want to replace your operating disk by the new one( you will have to back-up and copy all the data on it, and set up windows anew and reinstall all the programs in the end)

think about keeping the old one and adding some extra data storage space to your system (easier, plus there should be some IDE-connectors still free...)

please come back with more details on the windows version u are using in case you are not sure..

thought about it?

I'll give you advice on the second from the hardware side only, I leave data back-up to you, as this depends on the windows version you are using (win2000 has an easy to use back-up wizard, it allows you to back up your whole system(data, programs and drivers) in one big file on an external data storage medium like thumb drive or DVD, win xp and above lack that, you need extra back-up program....)

if confused already, please come back with info on which version if windows you are using, to guide you through this for win2000....

for the hardware side:

- boot up, enter BIOS by pressing Del, F1 or F2, see list of IDE drives,
write down order of appearance and come back with that info to me on fixya..!
-now pull power cord, dissassemble tower, find out if your power supply has more than 250 Watts of capacity
(you will need at least that much to support all the two ahrddisks plus drives plus mainboard, upgrade to 350Watts or more, a new supply!, if necessary)
- see how the actual harddisk is wired up( follows grey data cables, see if upper end leads to optic drive.

Now do come back to giving info on :

your decision
windows version
list of drives(as seen in bios)

C U soon?

Insert a s/hand HD into a pc as a replacement HD?

If it is from an identical PC there are no problems with doing this. If it is from a different model computer you will need to update drivers if you can get it to boot. Depending on how different the model of computers are it may cause a blue screen of death upon boot. This is a very risky and difficult task if the computers are different.
