Garmin zumo 550 map update problem

Tried to update to CNE NT 2009 using the DVD. PC updated fine, GPS unit failed to update, and left me with base map only. Tried several more times. It repeatedly failed at the same point (27%) when transferring the maps to the unit. I cleaned out unnecessary files (voices, routes etc.) to free up space and then master reset the unit. Same result: failed at 27%. I tried transferring the new map via Mapsource: same result. Then I tried transferring the old map via Mapsource: it worked, and the old map (V9) worked fine.
But I want updated maps, so I ran the update from the DVD again... and it failed to udate.
Does this point to a problem with the new update? Has anyone any ideas? I need help!

  1. Make a backup of your Zumo by copying all the file to your computer.
  2. Using your PC and MapSource select all the maps then send them to a SD memory card need 2Gig or bigger card.
  3. Try to rename this file to gmapprom.img and replace the same named file in your zumo. (I haven't tried this personally, so if it fails, just replace this with your backup and all will be as it was.)
  4. If this fails, you can use the SD memory card in your zumo and it will use this map instead, but it will take longer to boot your zumo.

Need to know how i update the maps card for it

The latest version of Garmin Express provides the ability to install a map update directly to an SD card.
The SD card installation option will only appear when updating a compatible device that does not have sufficient internal memory for the largest allowable map region. When using the SD card installation option, critical files are loaded to the SD card so it must remain in the device after the update to ensure full functionality. For the largest size SD card a device can use, refer to: What is the largest size Secure Digital (SD) card that an automotive device can accept?
The SD card support during the map update will only function with up-to-date software. It may be necessary to update the device's software with Garmin Express prior to updating the maps. These devices do not support the SD card option:
  • Nissan 700
  • nuvi 295
  • nuvi 300 series
  • nuvi 500 series
  • nuvi 600 series
  • nuvi 800 series
  • nuvi 805 series
  • nuvi 5000
  • StreetPilot series
  • zumo 450
  • zumo 550
  • zumo 665
For devices that do not support using the SD card with the map update application, any maps that do not fit in the internal memory can be installed to the SD card manually, using these instructions:

When I turn my Garmin 550 on it says loading maps, then goes to the select a local: It's frozen their on United States i push OK and nothing happens can not change the Locale it's frozen I tried...

Hi tkfranks331,

Press the power key and hold it if the screen of your Zumo is frozen. Keep holding the power key while pressing the key that has a plus symbol ("+") on it. This will reset your device and unfreeze the screen. You can also try calibrating the screen by pressing the power key for one full minute.

If this does not work, please follow these steps.

1. Update the internal disk software. Download and install WebUpdater on the computer. Please visit this link to download the WebUpdater.

2. Open WebUpdater on the computer.

3. Connect the Zumo 550 to the computer with its USB cable.

4. WebUpdater will automatically search for updates.

5. Follow the prompts to download any pertinent updates for the Zumo 550.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

My Garmin Nuvi 550 has quit talking to me. I understand the unit must be connected to a power source in order for it to speak. I have not paired it to my cell phone or downloaded the MP3 files. I have...

You should download, install then connect and run the Garmin WebUpdater on your nuvi 550 first. The new maps shouldn't have caused a problem - but stranger things have happened. After the firmware update, you will have the latest firmware to go along with those maps you installed.

IF you're still having problems, the Service Reps at Garmin are about as knowledgeable as they get for Garmin products. Give them a call on their dime too - there are other ways too - pick which method suits you best from the choices here.

Please rate this reply if it was helpful - good luck!

Need to up date maps

Create an account at myGarmin regsiter your unit ID number this will allow you to unlock the maps that you buy. You then have two options the first requires you to have an NT 2009 or 2008 map already installed.
nüMaps Lifetime™This will cost you £99.99 and is a on off payment Remember — this map update can only be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your Garmin GPS device. For example, a Garmin GPS device preloaded with North America maps only cannot be updated with a nüMaps Lifetime Europe Map Update, and vice versa. Check product compatibility. nüMaps Onetime™ This will cost you £79.99 and does not rely on having a map already installed.
The City Navigator® Europe NT comes on a DVD or you can download it.

How do you load maps? and are these Garmin maps. I try to keep the Zumo original and use an SD card for extra maps. Did you try this yet? And if you are using SD cards, try a different brand/quality. I had some lockups with crappy budget cards. Kingston, Sandisk and some other A brands work fine!
