Question about Acer Aspire 1640Z Notebook

1 Answer

Disc space Hello, I have recently had a 35 GB(D)hard added to my computor, because my (C) 35 GB was just about full (Acer Aspire). Now, I keep getting warnings saying my C drive is needing to free up more space to work efficiently (currently 154MG available). My question is how do I get the D drive to kick in as it has nothing on it. I copy a lot of ITunes music which I don't want to interfere with, so any advice you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you, Drew

Find all music and user created data files and move what is the larger portion of them to the D: by opening up two my computer windows and then the c: and the D: respectively and drag and drop what files you find over to the other dirve.. or open up the d: and then in the search application in the start menu highlight the music check box and select it.. then click search then drag and drop all files over to the D drive... this will create Massive free space on the C drive...

C drive says there is almost no space

I assume that you're running a spyware/adware program weekly and that no one using this laptop is downloading movies, or large amounts of audio files as either can fill the hard drive fairly quickly. Also, although it is usually given a different drive letter, you may be viewing the restore partition Acer uses if the computer needed to be reset to original factory settings.

My acer netbook "D" drive is nearly full

Hello,

Go to your drive C:, right-click, scroll down to "properties".

An option will pop-out. Look towards the down part and select Compress...... Then click "this"< then "OK".

This will compress your hard-drive and give you more space.

I hope you understand this.

Good luck.

Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Laptop won't recognize full 320 Gigabytes of new PATA hard drive. It's always been running a 80 Gigabyte 4200 RPM but that drive is old...a 2005 HD. New WD320 only reads 137...

The BIOS in the ACER determines the maximum size of the hard drive it can support.
Check the laptop's specification to see the max size you can install in this model laptop.
It appears that the max size your laptop can support is 140 Gb (unformatted). 137Gb formatted.

I suggest you install a hard drive up to 140 Gb capacity in your laptop and place the 320 Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and when you attach this hard drive to the USB port in your ACER laptop then you will be able to get the full 320 Gb capacity after you delete the partition and create a 320 Gb partition and format the hard drive.

I have a acer aspire one and this pop-up keeps coming up saying 'out of virtual memory' - i dont know what to do. Also every hour or so my theme changes to classic (i have Windows XP) for about 5-10...

Virtual memory is the space the laptop uses on the hard drive to write to and read from. It usually is caused by running too many applications at once, thereby putting a greater demand on the free disc space you have,

Firstly, you need to check how much free disc space you have. Less than say 1 GB will flag up the issue ( depending how much virtual memory the computer is allocating). You need to remove some data from the hard drive and back it up to free some disc space

Then consider upgrading your ram to help you run more programmes at once if needed

Finally, consider getting an external usb drive to store data on, or upgrade your hard drive

Low disc space

That means that your hard drive is full and it would be best if you transfer some or delete some files.

Hi j0shuatsb,
Acer like many other manufactures seem to design their system to fail or have issues just after their 1 year warranty is up. Like other Microsoft windows operating systems, when you receive an error message that you're memory is full. This does not mean you have run out of RAM = memory. You're notebook can only run a max of 4GB of memory. The error message refers to hard disk drive space. Depending on you're operating system, windows will lock out so much drive space so it can move about. All notebooks also have a hidden partition which holds drivers & programs used in combination for running the system restore.
This hidden partition can range in size from 2GB up to 4GB.
This also lessens you're total hard disk drive space. Bottom line is there is nothing wrong with your memory.
What you need is a larger hard disk drive. Notice the Technical specifications from this link:
http://www.acer.co.uk/public/page9.do?sp=page4&dau34.oid=24360&UserCtxParam=0&GroupCtxParam=0&dctx1=17&CountryISOCtxParam=UK&LanguageISOCtxParam=en&ctx3=-1&ctx4=United+Kingdom&crc=512458878
It does not show what size you're SATA hard disk drive is.
Since you are still in warranty, now would be the time to increase you're drive size. On another note, if you're HDD is the standard 160GB than there is an issue with your current HDD.
Please run a full system virus scan.
Suggest you back up all you're personal data on to a DVD & run you're system restore CD including a format to help you regain you're HDD full space. A temporary fix would be to uninstall any non needed programs through Add/Remove programs. This should free up some space. Many Acer programs you do not use at all or need should be the first to go.

Check disc makes the screen go blank

The disc check stopping and going to a blank screen, indicates a bad sector in the hard drive, and the drive will need replaced. If you can still use the machine by skipping the check disc, then you need to back up any files that you want to keep, eventually the hard drive will fail completely, if it hasn't already.
