Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

I am trying to set up some kind of wireless network for all of our PCs and DVRs. (Plus, I'd like to take advantage of the HDTV.) Over the years, my girlfriend has bought so many things that she thinks will fix everything. We haven't really tried to put it all together until last week. It's just too much for me to figure out. I'm looking up all the info online- hoping I can find a way to get started. I was just on the Tivo website and figured I should find help before I buy anything else or touch anything yet. I am listing everything we have purchased. It may be too much or too little information. Here's what we got.. TV---Hitachi Ultravision Digital HGTV(SRS and BBE) Two Direct TV Tivo DVRs (seperate models and software) *The larger DVR is a Samsung Series 2 IRD Model: SIR-S4120R Software is 6.2-01-2-381 Recording capacity: 100 hours *The smaller DVR is a RCA Series 2 IRD Model: DSR7000/17 Software VRSN: 6.2-01-2-121 Recording capacity: 35 hours DLink HD Media player (DSM 520 V1.2) Broadband connection with A Netgear RangeMax wireless router (WPN 824 v2 with a PC Card (WPN511) and a USB Adapter (WPN111) We have several PCs, 2 wireless laptops, an external super DVD writer-HP Lightscribe and other external hard drives. Then we have our big PC. It's an HP Pavillion a1620n with Windows XP Media Center. We also have things like a VCR and DVD; plus, every type of cable needed. I'm sure I haven't remembered to list everything. This should be enough to understand my problems. We would like to clean some things off the DVRs and add them to a PC or disk. I don't want to buy another DVR if I can help it. We have service plans with SuddenLink and Direct TV and we know we're paying too much, So we'd like to change our service providers. (I wanted to state that in case it makes a difference with our TiVo DVRs. If ya have any advice, I've got my pen and paper.

It sounds like you have 2 different complicated issues.
First being getting your home audio/video components working together. Secondly getting your internet/computers all networked and communicating with each other. It may be easier if you just list all the devices with make and model in one easy to read list so it can all be broken down. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution and I can gladly assist you further.
Thank you,
lee

What kind of wireless card should I get to put in the desk top computer in the other room so it will work with my westell modem?

NOTE: Client PCs can use any Wireless 802.11b/g card to communicate with VersaLink. The Wireless card and

VersaLink must use the same Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security code type. The factory default for WEP is

Enabled. Please be sure that your computer's wireless adapter is configured properly for whichever network setting
you use: WEP or WPA. You can access the settings in the advanced properties of the wireless network adapter.

Only one of my laptops can access the wireless network. When trying to log on the others we enter the pass word and i say can not connect I have a Belkin G wireless router and a road runner cable ISP

Can you provide details of the other PCs Try the following
1) remove wireless profiles http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/networking-tutorials-f17/removing-an-existing-wireless-profile-t109.htm from your PCs and then try to reconnect 2) Log into the router and remove the wireless security and see if the PCs can now connect and if so - try adding security again

HOW DO I USE A WIRELESS PRINTER WITH NO ROUTER. I WANT TO PRINT FROM TWO COMPUTERS, THAT BOTH USE DIAL UP INTERNET

You can attach the printer directly through USB cable to your computer and print, or you can connect the printer and your computer to the same wireless network and then print using the wireless and your connection.
Internet is not necessary, only a communication path needs to be established. For this whether its your neighbor's wifi network, your own wifi network, a usb cable connection between your pc and printer etc printing will be accomplished.

Yes, you need to get in the router settings and disable DHCP in LAN configuration. That should do it. Also enable the ICS for the Air card. Wireless secured network key code

Hi BabyDoll - to find your key, log in to your router. Enter 192.168.0.1 into your browser. If the defaults haven't been changed, the user is " admin" all small case without the quotes. There is no password. Just enter the user and leave the password blank. To get the key, click on the wireless button on the left. Then look down the page and you'll see the passcode fields. This is what you're looking for. Also take notice of what's above it such as WPA, WEP, etc. Write this info down. You can also go into your pcs that you use wireless on and put that key in and the kind of security (WPA, etc) so that it will not ask for it every time.
If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If not, DON'T RATE YET. Let me know what happened and I'll be happy to assist you further. If you need to know how to enter the info so that you won't have to enter it all the time let me know. I'll help you with that. Let me know what happens. Thanks.

Is your receiver directly connected to your router via ethernet cable or are you trying to connect wirelessly? If wirelessly its probably your security settings at fault.

if via wire, it looks like you typo'd the gateway. an internal IP address will usually start with "192" not "92".

Wireless network

Hi there,
You will need to set the drives on the other networked PCs as "shared" before they will be visible on the network. You can do this by right clicking on the drives (while on the other computers) and going into the "sharing" tab. You must enable sharing and then set a name for the drive or folder you want to share. You can either share the entire drive or a specific folder, I recommend limiting the sharing to a specific folder instead of a whole drive for security purposes.

Happy sharing!

How to use this unit as a Access Point for an existing Wireless Home Network

set the second router through the web menus to a different ip address, cant have 2 devices on the same (default) 192.168.0.1 address, try 192.168.0.2 (example only) to stop data collisions
connect by cable secondary router lan port 1 to the primary router lan port 4 (any lan port to any lan port),
drag secondary router upstairs on its cable and install it wherever you want
set two routers on different channels.
set all wep settings on both routers the same.
set all pcs to 'auto channel' select
wireless adaptors in pcs will then select strongest signal at any point and transmit thru that router
