Question about Sony Grand WEGA KF42WE610 42" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

I have a Sony Grand Wega 61" that is only 2 years old and the screen goes black for a couple of minutes and comes back on. It's not losing sound, just the picture. It was only happening about once an hour and has gotten worse over the past week. Could this be the bulb

The fan is fine. I am calling a repair center today to come look at it. After reading other posts on the internet, it's probably the lamp driver. We definitely will not buy another Sony. We didn't purchase the extended warranty, thinking that being a Sony, we wouldn't need it. The RCA 36" we purchased 10 years ago is still going strong with the new owners we gave it to. We put our RCA 37" LCD flat panel wide screen in the family room and noticed it actually has a much better picture than the Sony 61" does. The next one will be a Samsung Plasma and we will definitely buy an extended warranty.

Thanks so much for the info on the Plasma. We do still have one older set (15 years old) outside on our patio that is going strong too.

I spoke with the repair shop yesterday and he said he "thinks" it's the bulb going bad and if they came out and charged me $365 that's what they would replace. Being that we can get the bulb for $200 and my husband can do it himself, we'll just try that.

I ordered a lamp online for $180 including shipping. My husband worked late, so I decided to play TV repair chic!! It took all of 5 minutes to replace and the TV works beautifully. So I saved $185 by doing it myself. Just because there isn't a code doesn't mean it's not the lamp!!!

Thanks for the comment. It made me quite proud and my husband was too, although he would never tell anyone that I'm the one that fixed it!!! lol ;-)

It could be but it may be cycling due to heat; if you turn the sound completely down and listen at the rear of the set, you should hear the murmur of a fan. I would listen when video is there and when it isn't to sense if there is any difference in low-level noise coming from within.
If you don't hear a fan, it may be either burdened with a dust buildup or failed. Any set that uses high-temperature light sources will be protected against fire or internal damage by a thermostat of some nature that will trip and reset by itself.

It seems that the quality one could expect from Sony is history judging from the number of problems folks are having.

I would urge you to do more research before buying a plasma set. They are on their way out since the advent of ever-larger LCD screens.
The margin the plasma sets once had over LCDs in brightness, viewing angle and color saturation has nearly disappeared so the plasmas no longer are that much more pretty to look at.
The plasmas suffer from a disease similar to CRT sets in that they use a phosphorescent coatings to generate light and this construction is subject to burn-in in the same manner.

Since all of our consumer stuff seems to have much less life in them than we were accustomed to, maybe the screen construction isn't important; everything seems to be dying in 2-4 years anyhow.
Because of the huge number of failures of all later TVs, I've been advising friends and family to get a converter box and put it, and their old sets, in a nice dry place so they have a backup when their formerly 'gorgeous' big screens bite the dust.

A spent bulb will cause the whole set to go off. If you have not changed the bulb in all of these years, first you are lucky, and second that is probably the cause of your problem.

My Sony comes on then both sound and picture goes black.

After being on a little while, the screen goes black (no audio as well) for 20 to 30 seconds. Green light stays on. Then, picture comes back on and takes a couple of seconds to get up to full brightness. About 5 seconds or so after the video comes back, the audio returns.

Until this morning, has only happened a couple of times a day, now happening more often. About 3 times in last 20 minutes.

KDF-E55A20 is about 3 years old.
