Re: trying to turn on the self-cleaning oven, get error...
If you get the entire model number from the machine you can go to whirlpool.com click on customer support then click on manuals and guides lower right, type in the full model number and it will bring up your model and you can download the owners manual. You should find the answer there. Good Luck.

start with Activating the service diagnostic modes. You can start with the cycle selector knob at any position.
Be sure the washer is in standby mode (plugged in with all indicators off).
Perform the following sequence of movement using the cycle selector knob. NOTE: After reset, sequence "a" through "e" must be completed within 6 seconds. When it tells you to rotate the cycle selector knob, it means 1 click, not a full turn. Once you have completed the cycle knob turns reset and "a" through "e", turn the cycle selector 1 click clockwise from the position it is already in. This is the fault code display mode. Then press the start button. Each time you turn the cycle selector knob 1 click clockwise after pressing start will show you an error code. Note: this washer stores 4 codes if any. The error codes on this washer are displayed in this format: F5 E3, F7 E1, etc. There is an error code chart in the image below.
If there are no error codes stored, I recommend that you start from the beginning (step 1 above) and then run the Automatic test mode. If this unit detects a problem, it will display the error at the end of this test.
Water Temperature Sensor Error
If during the water heating step in wash cycle, the water temperature sensor (NTC) value is out of range, or the heating element circuit has failed, the "F/05" error code will be displayed.
Check the Water Temperature Sensor, Heating Element and Element Relay
Check connections to the Sensor, Heating Element and Relay
It depends on which model you have. Some have automatic locks others have a lever but the door has to be locked in order for self clean to work. Then you will have a knob to turn to "self clean" or a button that says clean or self clean to push then you will very likely have to select a temp and maybe press start. It is a very high heat process it doesn't always smell pleasant normally takes several hours 3-5 hours. The door will remain locked untill clean cycle completes and the oven cools. Then you can open the door and wipe out the ash.
The first thing to try, however, is to unplug the washer for AT LEAST 30 minutes in an attempt to reset the Central Control Unit (CCU). Sometimes this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches. If the error code reappears, then you know you have a legitimate error. In many cases, the small connector that plugs into the heat sensor either becomes corroded, or comes loose. Make sure you troubleshoot the washer while it is UNPLUGGED.
