Question about Sony KV-20VM40 20 in. Combo

1 Answer

Picture flicks on and off

I have a Sony tv - it is approximately 7 years old.
About 3 weeks ago the picture started flicking on and off - just for a few seconds. On some stations I can watch an entire programme without problems, on others the flicking is every few seconds. If I use my VCR I get the same problem. I have had the cable guy in and he says it is not the cable, but the TV.
How can I fix this?

Set is 7 years old - it turns off intermintently

Ours used to do that - and then we moved it to another state with us. Since the move it doesn't shut itself off anymore. I suspect that the problem was dirt and dust inside which got knocked loose in the move and the shutdown was due to thermal limits being exceeded. You may want to try vacuuming or blowing out the dust inside if you feel comfortable opening up the unit.

Hi No picture

It is 16 years old TV and I do not think that spare parts would be available any more so think about new TV instead of repairing this TV.
Thanks.

All TV's in house failing, a few at a time

Hey PNorris,

If multiple electronic devices are failing in your home all at once, I would probably first have to ask if your home recently experienced an electrical storm or major power surge of any kind.

Normally the effects of such large-scale surges are immediately noticeable - TV's and other major electronic devices may fail to turn on, fuses may be blown or circuit breakers tripped, and in some cases electrical wiring may be melted.

If nothing like this has happened recently, low-level power surges may still be a potential cause of this problem. When the motor from any large appliance (such as an air conditioner or refrigerator) turns on or off, it often diverts power to and from other electronic devices using the same circuits. This fluctuation in electrical current may result in low-level power surges to every connected device. While not immediately noticeable, these low-level surges can often cause the eventual failure of (and gradually degrading quality in) many audio/video components.

Typically, the easiest way to avoid situations like this is to make sure that outlets are not overloaded and surge protectors are used with every major electrical device in your home. For older homes however, replacing the house's wiring may be necessary. Homes that were originally built at the turn of the 20th century may not always have wiring capable of supporting the electrical needs of many modern appliances.

Ultimately, this means that in addition to contacting your local TV repair facility, you may want to also speak with an electrician. This is probably the best way to determine whether or not power surges have caused these failures, and may give you a better idea how to proceed.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Sony 20in TV/VCR combo suddenly stopped working?!

The problem you have with the tape is probably one of the nylon or plastic gears have worn or cracked and the mechanism has gone out of timing. the no channels is probably the tuner assy. These Ive seen go out a hundred times. Unfortunatly this is an 8 year old unit and the cost to repair will most likely exceed, or close to the cost of another unit, as I know that tuner assy part #TELH-005A cost around $63.00, and the cost to repair the deck assy depends on what the problem is and then add labor ,your looking at around 150 to 200 bucks. Good Luck
