You need to uninstall the hardware, and trying reinstalling it. To do this, you need to (if running windows) click the start button, right click the "My Computer" icon, and go to manage. From there, you need to select "Device Manager".

There, you should see something that probably has a question mark in a yellow circle. You need to right-click it, and click uninstall. (Make sure your harddrive is plugged in). After the uninstallation, right-click, and select "scan for hardware changes". It should then, hopefully, successfully install the hardware needed for the harddrive.

I think that your disk-drive is "SLIGHTLY" dead. :-(

Disassemble the enclosure.

Get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.

Access Maxtor's web-site, and check the warranty-status of the disk.

If the warranty still is valid, Maxtor will replace the disk-drive, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has ended, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it into the enclosure, to "reconstitute" your external storage-device.

Welcome to fixya,

The main caused of the problem is the enclosure of your Maxtor ext drive you need to change ot replace it to a new one. Take your hadridsk out of the enclosure and buy new enclosure and then put your hardisk back on to the new enclosure.

See message please.

Hi,

If your PC is not acknowledging the device nor allowing you to install a driver the most likely cause is a failed circuit board in the enclosure with the next most likely be a failed hard drive inside the enclosure.

Take the drive to a local computer store and swap the hard drive into a new enclosure. If this works your done, if not the drive is likely damaged and you will need the help of a data recovery pro.

Either way comment back here and if needed I will point you to an appropriate pro.

Maxtor 80gb hard disk not dtecting

You might want to try downloading this fix from Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/KB/908673, as your first line of attack.  The problem seems to be within your usb 2.0 hub on your computer.  See if this helps.
Thanks for posting.

Can't open my Maxtor 250 One Touch Mini Hardrive

Simply turning it on or off will not result in a loss of any data if you already have data stored on it.

I assume that you have the device connected to your computer via a USB cable. If it has an on/off switch either in the front of back go ahead and press it. It should take a few seconds for the computer to recognize the device, but it should work just fine.

Hope this helps.

New Maxtor 3200

Hi, This is a common problem with external storage. Based on your post/description: 1. Your laptop does not recognize the external hard drive via its USB connection - try on a different computer - if it is still a no go, then it's not a PC problem; 2. Try replacing the cable - again if a no go, so it's not an interface/cable problem; 3. That leaves you only with the PS3200 itself as the possible at fault. An external hardrive would consist of 2 main parts, the electronic board and the hard disk itself. The board seldom (if ever) fails. Its function is to provide conversion/interface from the SATA/IDE connectors of the HD to the out USB/Firewire. The HD more often than not fails. Most external storage uses a standard HD inside the enclosure. Your possible options: a. Claim warranty/replacement; b. Replace the HD only; c. Physically remove the HD and connect it directly inside a desktop either as IDE or SATA and run manufacturer's diagnostic and/or third party recovery software; d. Seek services of professional data recovery firms (if data/files are mission critical); Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
