My speakers won't work when connected

It's on a laptop: both small laptop speakers work, but when i plug in external speakers or headphones in the headphone jack then the sound only comes out of the Left one (or nothing at all). My dell guarantee has expired so they wouldn't help me out. What else can i do and at what cost? and whats the problem? sound card? it happened right after i tried plugging an amplifier in that same audio jack. probably blew it up somehow. I hear it is hard to replace laptop sound cards though...
ps: i have already verified that the plug is fully inserted.+ it is not a volume control issue since both internal laptop speakers work when nothing is plugged in. + i have already verified that the headphones/speakers i was using are fully functional and stereo. they do not need an seperate power source.

well i know that the speakers arent broken since they work on other mp3 players. and the balance is right since when nothing is plugged in the audio jack, the sound comes out of both internal speakers,

Can external speakers be used with the sony cfd s 350 model? If so, do they plug into the headphone jack on top of the boombox?

There is no provision for connecting external speakers. The headphone connector is exclusively for connecting headphones.

Cant get to play music without headphoes

Most modern computers come with internal speakers already installed, especially laptop computers.
These speakers may be sufficient if you are performing typical computer tasks, but when you play computer games, listen to music or watch movies on your computer, you may want louder and more vibrant sound.
You can achieve this by installing external speakers or headphones. These can be connected to your computer through the speaker or USB ports included on your computer.

Plug in the speakers or headphones.
If the speakers or headphones use a stereo plug, insert the plug into the speaker/headphone port normally located on the side or front of your computer.
This port is often color-coded green. If the equipment is connected using USB, locate a free USB port.
Some external speakers will also need to be plugged into a power outlet in the wall or your surge protector.
This may be all you need to do to get the speakers or headphones to work. If they do not, continue to the next step.
Open the audio settings on your computer.
From the Windows Start menu, open the Control Panel. Here you will find audio and sound settings.
Click the heading to see your sound and audio options.
Choose "Manage audio devices" in Windows 7.

Find your Playback device.
In the Playback tab, you can select your speakers and set them as the default for your system.
If you do not see your speakers or headphones, they have not been installed properly. Disconnect and reconnect them to see if it corrects the problem.

Configure your settings.
Select your device from the list and click "Configure" to test your settings.
You can adjust the volume by using the volume slider on your computer's task bar or using external controls on the speakers or headphones.

How can I increase volume for movie viewing?

There's not much you can do in the laptop itself since it's got only a small amplifier built in, and the speakers aren't meant to get very loud. You need to use external devices for more volume.

If you're by yourself, headphones work well. For watching with an audience, you're best off using external speakers which you can plug into the headphone jack. Then you can get as much volume as those speakers can deliver. Or, if you're at home or somewhere where a stereo system or home theater setup is available, you can connect the computer to an available input. You just need a cable with the appropriate plugs on each end.

Speakers are not working in dell inspiron 6000

Please connect an external speaker or headphones and check if you get sound. If sound works then the issue is with the onboard speakers in the laptop.

If sound does not work with the external speakers or headphones then the issue could be with the sound card driver or settings.

How can I connect external speakers to my toshiba laptop C650D? Thank You.

Either with a stereo headphone plug and into and external amplifier or you could use a PC speaker set up. That will plug into the headphone socket also.
Hope this helps.

Built in speakers not working

Are you using external speakers? or internal?

EXTERNAL SPEAKERS: If your are plugging speakers into your headphone jack and they dont play, but you plug headphones into the same port and they work fine.. then it is the external speakers.

INTERNAL SPEAKERS: But if you are using the speakers in the laptop, then your speakers are probably bad. Try some software settings, but probly just bad speakers. Could also be that the speaker cord inside the laptop came unplugged from the motherboard. In which case you would have to take the laptop apart and plug it back into the motherboard.

Good Luck.

Make sure the balance control in your VOLUME CONTROL icon in windows tray (by the clock) is centered....
There are sliders for each output/input and a balance control for each of these. uncentred they can switch off one channel.

Can't mute inbuilt speakers

That is not a software problem.
The headphones/external speakers jack socket has a switch to exclude from audio the internal speakers, when a jack plug is connected.
This is a very simple device and is not software controlled.
The fact that it has gone faulty at the same time you reinstalled the system is a coincidence.
If it does not mute when you insert headphones, all you can do is trying to play with the jack plug , inserting and pulling it out. If this does not unlock the switch, the alternative is having the jack socket replaced by a technician. This is generally an expensive repair, asthe socked is soldered on motherboard.
A cheap alternative to a proper repair is using an external USB to Audio Adapter and mute the internal audicard when using headphones.

Compaq C740TU speaker does not deactivates if external speakers are connetced

The internal speakers should automatically be disconnected by inserting a 3.5mm jack plug in the audio out socket. It may be that your headphones or external speakers are using a 2.5mm jack which is too small to operate the switches in the audio out socket. Purchase a 3.5mm jack plug [cheap] and plug this in if it disconnects the laptops internal speakers then you need to connect accesories with the correct size plug.
