Each toner cartridge comes with it's own chip, so far correct.
The communication of this chip with the Master board (PWB-A)
and the Controller control board (PWB-P) is essential while initialising.
Those amongst us that have used refilled Tonercartridges should be
certain the Chip's counter has been reset indeed. That is a guarantee
your Cartridge-supplier should be able to provide.
When all cartridges are placed in the Drum and a visiual check shows no aligning mishaps ( e.g: cartridge not seated properly, sticking out in a 1 deg -off angle or: Drum not seated well, making it rotate a bit awkward ) the basic conditions for proper operations are available.
The only technical condition that has not been checked up to now is the condition of the contact-resistance: each Cartridge comes with a bunch of copper-coloured contacts, that provide means of communication with the Chip, means to get rid of Static-electricity and means to determine position. Whenever 17J pops up randomly,
the odds are that one of those contact-strips do not function well, jeopardising the MTBF of this otherwise beautiful device.
Solution: obtain the finest Scotch-brite or the fines Sand-paper you can
get and clean all of the contacts-surfaces. Don't be agressive on the surfaces, as they probably only are oxidised : as soon as that oxide-layer has been broken, your contacts are fails-proof again, providing you also have cleaned the "silver" colored SST contact-surfaces
of the drum. Use a Vacuum-cleaner and a soft brush to remove debris and waste-toner. Re-mount the Toner-cartridge in the only proper way
it should be mounted and move on to the next one. Don't forget to also clean the Drum by vacuumcleaner as this part is as important
as the cartridges itself if it comes down to the contact-surfaces.
Hope this helps, it did the trick for me !
