    The picture is scrambled on cable, I did connect a vcr/dvd player, the dvd logo came up but could not play dvd on main picture, but it played in pip mode with no problem, I did change to cable #2 with the same results.

    There was a good picture on main channel only with S-video cable , the other connection cable gave me nothing, and with the S connection there was picture from dvd player, but unit would not play disk, I have checked all connections on boards both top and bottom, as I have stated pip will play with normal RF connection, but when you swap pictures with main picture, that channel is displayed in pip mode. What that mean is that if the main channel is on 12, and pip is on channel 22, no matter what swap in made, pip has a very good picture, so the main channel has a picture.

    Hitachi 57UWX20B Has good pip but not picture on main tuner, I have replaced main tuner and both STK's, connected dvd player with S-cable and there was a picture on main tuner, but dvd would not play. pip mode is good, I can swap pip and still get the picture that was on main tuner, but the main tuner has raster but no picture.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a couple of ideas you may want to consider. explore or try:

  • it could be the associated circuitry of the main tuner such as the 33 volts zener diode or the PLL/logic for main channel selection;
  • interesting that the DVD would display initially but unit will not play. I am inclined to think there are two issues here, TV and DVD;
  • it would be to your advantage to try another S-Video or composite signal source. An old VCR or even a video camera would serve the purpose in lieu of the DVD;
  • it would be to your added advantage access to reference a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings.
Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Pip is maged by a dedicated video processing IC, if the picture is scrambled only on pip, then the IC on digital board (main board) is faulty.

If all signal from cable is scrambled, then test cable signal on a different tv.

The symptoms you describe are what happens in the presence of magnetic fields, for example loudspeakers being too close to the display screen. Move away any magnetic objects and let me know if the problem continues.

Hi

Just make sure to use a cloth that does not let out alot of hairs,also one more thing if this is does not correct the problem that your tv set is having,then the problem is coming from a faulty capacitor next to the FBT (flyback transformer)or the connvergence board with faulty ICs,i would suggest to take it to near by tv repair shop and get it serviced,remember to be safe and have the tv set unplugged at all times when working on the tv set.

Thanks
Rylee

I am currently repairing the same tv, what I found is that the video pak is going.I have checked pricing and the unit is about 500 bucks,but if you take it to a repair shop they may be able to repair it or send it away for repair. It may be worth the estimate charge

    Problem seems in digital signal board which not processing video signal properly. This board needs to be tested or replaced.

it sounds like you have the common problem with these models. The poblem has occured so offten that toshiba issued a service bulliteen about it. There is a problem with a cuircit board called the Hypermodule its a signal processing board/ the ideal situation would be replaced this board but it has happen so much it may be difficult to find this ooard so this board can be repaird. The secound problem is to fix this board 11 very very small parts called capacitors need to be replaced. i have also replace these and only someone advance in solder should attempt it very small. twezers and magnifer. You can hire someone but it very labor intensive. Our shop charges 300 just in labor It can be fixed but I would adviise its just no worth it

Signal Problem

Hi,

When the sound is working and the picture is not it indicates the main power supplies are working but the picture supply is not. The picture supply that powers the projection tubes is a high voltage generator and is very expensive to repair. Not even most tv techs now how to troubleshoot them. So, I cannot recommend you repair it yourself unless you are a trained high voltage tech.

The cost of repair - my wild guess - would be around $300. However, the real cost can only be determined by someone who can make an accurate diagnosis - which will require a hands-on approach the problem.

If you have any other problem please ask me..

Check if it has a scrambled image on all sources ie - DVD- VCR - cable/satellite box. Since the PIP is normal it sounds like the signal source is bad.

TV picture scrambled and getting worse

This can be a fault in the tuner, IF, or primary part of the video processing. With age and use some of the parts, and especialy capacitors, in these sets can become thermo sensitive and unstable.

To service these types of faults can be very time consuming. On top of this would be the cost of the parts.

Considering the age and type of set that you have, I would suggest that it is time to be looking for a new set.

on the signal board replace the caps by the 5/9 volt regulators. c2p04 is the main culprit. 6 caps in total can be changed. I believe c2p05 also.
