ADF backside scanning optical alarm (upper optical unit ADF) is E3 alarm. When there is an irregularity in the amount of light (ADF back), "E" and "3" will be displayed alternately on the function number display panel of the scanner.
Please check the followings:
1.Does the same symptom occur after turning OFF and ON the scanner? 2. Is the lower glass (white sheet guide) of the reading section dirty? Open the ADF, and clean the sheet guide (white part) and the glass. 3. Is the upper Optical unit ADF dirty? Are the cables damaged? Are the connectors connected properly? 4.E3: Is the upper lamp ON? Are the cables damaged? Are the connectors connected properly? Disconnect the SCSI cable and turn the scanner ON. Open the ADF and press ADF cover open sensor as shown below to see if the ADF lamps light which has to be replaced.
I would recommend to contact an authorized FUJITSU scanner service provider or the dealer where you purchased the scanner.
Remove your scanner from the PC and uninstall the software. Now reinstall the software and connect the scanner to be detected and installed. Check scanner properties to see the settings. If the fault stays get intouch with Fujitsu dealer.
Found it! To fix the SA010771 error. This assumes you have already sat there (like I did) and tried everything including adding the event in the scanner settings and changing 0 to ScandALL PRO) Open Scandall Pro click SCAN - Batch Scan Settings - Add a new profile, for the moment just leave everything as is (change it later). Click Close then close ScandALL PRO and then reopen it. Click TOOL - Preferences - Event tab, you should now be able to select Profile 1 (or whatever you named it) from the dropdown for Scan. You can figure the rest out from there : )
The scanner does self-diagnostic when receiving Read Command (to start scanning) and displays the result if any error or alarm is detected.
Error code-E3 in Fi-4120c2 scanner means "Light intensity check" . When this error is displayed on the scanner panel, TWAIN displays the following error-
" Irregular status is detected in scanner. If this status recurs after power cycling, please give following Sense key and ASC code to your service provider. If ASC code is the following, please confirm following status before power cycling’ - When ASC=0x580, confirm if the shipping lock (if any) is set at “Release” position. - When ASC=0x680, clean the sheet guide (white part) in ADF. (Error Code DS42001)
E3 explains Optical alarm (back). This alarm occurs if the gain adjustment of the CCD amplifier does not succeed at a READ command for the first document, or during scanning.
Probable causes: - The lamp, the optical system or white sheet guide is dirty. - Defective lamp or CCD. - Connector disconnected

You can try to clean the retard pad under the feed roll, but for best results you should replace it. Parts are readily available on the web. You should spend around $20 for the pad, and $50 for the feed roll. You may not need the roll. Examine it and see how the tread looks. These parts are easy to replace.
Drain pump probably not working. Put machine on cycle 7 and it should turn on the drain pump straight away. you can hear this near the bottom of the machine. if it is silent hten the pump probably needs replacing. I repaired mine be removing it and then dismantle the magnet from the tube then give it a good clean out.
