Question about Linksys WUSB54GSC Compact Wireless-G USB Network Adapter w/ SpeedBooster [WUSB54GSC] (LS-SB54GSC)

1 Answer

How do I get the firmware to work?

Thanks for your reply. But how and where do I get the firmware. I've tried but no new firmware has been released for the WUSB54GC. Still couldn't get the PC to get on the Internet after connecting to the Network. My PC is running on Windows XP SP2. I heard that some firmware will interfere with the video transcoding process. Any truth in that? Again, Thanks for your help.

Try upgrading to Windows SP3. if that doesn't work then reset your router then reconfigure everything that runs off that sometimes it locks up

My router is still working, but can't connect to the internet

So you've done everything I've suggested already - and yup, it's definitely the router.
As I mentioned before, the DSL modem may well be quite fussy about the MAC address it sees, so if it's been successfully working with your PC, it might need 'refreshing' (normally done with a reboot) to get it to work with the router.
I'm running out of suggestions - would it cause any problems to carry out a factory reset on the Linksys router, and installing the latest firmware? Or even, perhaps try one of the many alternative firmwares that are available (I'm using DD-WRT - and see if that works any better?
I've carried out all kinds of reconfigurations with my two WRT-54Gs, and they're quite resilient to being played about with... I really hope some of my suggestions help you get it talking to the internet again!

Linksys router problem

Try a factory reset on the router, in most cases this can be done by holding the reset button on the unit down for 10 or more seconds. Once this is done you may have to enter any settings into the router again.

Also, try download the latest firmware from and upgrade the firmware on the router.

Can not get on the internet

What do you mean cannot get on the internet? when you are plugged into the router does this mean you cannot see any web pages? are you able to pull an IP address from the router? Check if your able to ping Gateway (router) and get a reply back. To do this go to your start command then run and type CMD and hit enter... a dos like window will come up then type the command ipconfig and hit enter again... look for the "default gateway" ex) and then try to ping it! do this by typing ping you should get something like this.

Pinging with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255
Reply from bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255
Reply from bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255

if you do then that means your getting a reply back from the router and the connection between the 2 are fine. If the router is unable to obtain an ip address from your vendor.. there could be multiple reasons why. Does your provider do mac filtering? also you can try upgrading the firmware on the unit by going to and searching for the latest firmware.. let me know how your tests go.

BEFSR81 Server and BOOTP Packet Vulnerability

A flaw in the built-in DHCP server causes the routers to send BOOTP reply packets that contain sensitive information about traffic running through the devices as well as other random information about the router's configuration. New firmware to fix this issue is now available! See information on the Linksys site for upgrading to the new firmware.
