Question about Computers & Internet

Reformatting Harddrive hey I need some help here, I had partitioned and was installing the OS (windows2000), just to find out that I don't have the code, so the process was partially completed. I decided to reformat the drive and install Win98 instead for which I have the code and that's where I got stuck. I can't get back to the command prompt mode. This is a new hard drive, How can I complete this task?

Do you have any other computers? If you do, use another computer and make a DOS emergency boot disk with it.

You can format from the bootdisk by running the fdisk command from the prompt. Than you can reinstall windows 98. In my personal opinion, you should really upgrade your operating system. Still running windows 98 is a major security issue.

Format harddrive

What OS are you using?

In Windows, go to the disk management utility and see if the disk is listed. (In Win 7, this is Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Create and format hard disk partitions.) For XP and Vista, the directions are similar but do differ a bit. Look at the bottom of the window, to see the list of disks. (Disk 0 is your main hard disk; do not reformat this by accident.)

Assuming the disc is correctly connected to the enclosure and is seen by the computer, you should see it listed as a removable drive. Note: you may need to change the USB port. The MX100 is an enclosure for 3.5" hard disks and needs the AC cord plugged in as well.

You may want to connect and turn on the enclosure when the computer is off, then turn it on. Then turn on the computer. This will hopefully allow the USB drivers to note the new device.

For the Mac OS, look for the Disk Utility.

If you still don't see the drive, check that the cover (and plugs) are completely seated. (Turn off the enclosure first.) Try the hard disk in another enclosure or a USB/SATA hard drive adapter. (If you have a desktop with a free SATA data port and power connector, try connecting the disk directly to the computer. (You need to determine if the enclosure is faulty or the disk itself is bad.)

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with your OS and if you see the disk in the disk management utility, if you need additional assistance.

Cindy Wells
(This enclosure will work with older versions of Windows, back to Win98Se. However, I don't believe all of those versions came with disc formatting utilities. In that case, you would need a third-party partitioning software (Partition Magic, Paragon Partition Manager). If this disk was in another computer and you want to save the data, try copying the data before reformatting. This may be easier to do with the USB/SATA adapter or the direct connection to the motherboard of a desktop.)

Double operating system

You need to partition your harddrive. Use Boot Camp on a Mac and follow the instructions it gives you.
On Windows use a disk utility program to partition it then once you have done that, boot from the CD of the new OS you want to install and select the new partition.
On a Mac, hold down "Option" to select the OS you want.
Hope this helps!

How to reformat my laptop

Initially backup all the data in the computer.
The reformatting can be done by using the OS installation disk or by using Restore partition . The restore partition will be provided by some laptop manufacture and you need to use the recovery disk to restore it.

How to reformat my laptop

  1. If you have the recovery cd, you can just pop-in the CD, select the reformat option and the installation process will continue automatically. Some laptop might have a special partition in the drive contains the operating system, drivers, etc. in case you want to reformat your laptop without the CD.
  2. Step 2 If you don't have the recovery CD, you usually can request one from the manufacturer. Otherwise, if you want to do a clean install, make sure you download all the drivers for your laptop, this may includes: motherboard, chipset, graphic card, sound card, modem, network card. Once you do that, put in the OS CD and start installing.
  3. Step 3 If you decided to do a clean install without the recovery CD, it would be best to create partition on your harddrive first, so you can have dedicated partition for operating system and backup. The next time you want to reformat your harddrive, you can just reformat that particular partition ex. C:\
  4. Step 4 After the reformatting process finished and you have installed a new clean OS. Install drivers one by one and restart when it's required. Try to do it in order from basic function -> secondary ex. motherboard, chipset, graphic, sound, modem, networking, etc.
  5. Step 5 Install back all programs that you might need. If you already backup the installation programs or have the installation CDs handy, you can do this pretty fast.
  6. Step 6 Rearrange the look and customize your new operating system, refer to the screenshot you have taken earlier before the reformatting process begin if you want to get the same look and feel.

How to reformat acer aspire one

Put a Windows XP disk (has to be the full version not an upgrade) into the CD drive and the computer will ask to "press any key to boot from CD". Press a key. Follow the prompts, It is important to delete the partition when asked. Then recreate it. Format the drive with NTFS file system. The setup will go on to reinstall windows automatically.

Now, the only challenge is to reload any software drivers for components Windows does not find automatically. This is a little tricky. Do google search of Acer drivers or go to www.drivers.com.

Also, remember all your software programs need to be re-installed. For example, your Microsoft Office (word, excel, etc). Any games, any virus protection, Quickbooks, etc. The printer software also needs to be re-installed. Hopefully you still have the original disk or if its a Hewlett Packard go to their website.

Booting problem.

hello, its possible that your partition is really defective or a software that you have installed has corrupted your windows os.  reformatting might solve your problem. If you really dont want to format because you have important files.  Try the following
1. Do not repair your OS. Install the windows Operationg System to another partition or harddisk.  By this way if you have succesfully installed the OS, you can now backup your files from your original partition. and then you can reformat the orginal partition.
2. you can also try a Bootable Operating System from a USB flash drive or Download a LIVE Linux Os so that you can backup your file, then you can reformat
3. you can try softwares that repair you partition, there are numerous softwares that offer to fix your partition. but it comes with a price.
