A few things here, first have you just downloaded your pictures to your computer? If so then remove the memory card from the camera and make sure the little "lock" switch on the side of the upper left corner is in the unlock position. Unlock position is with this slide type switch pushed towards the top or the gold contacts. The you insert the XD card back into the slot making sure not to move teh little switch. The close the compartment turn on the camera and go directly to your menu and format the card. If this was a new card then it needs to be formatted, if this card has just had pictures downloaded to the computer then it needs formatting. There are a number of reasons for card error messages but most if not all can be solved by formatting the card
Remove the SD memory card and make sure the little slide lock id pushed forward towards the gold contacts. Then carefully insert it back into the camera so as not to knock the slide lock and close up the memory card door. Turn the camera on and go into your set up menu to format, format the card and you will be able to take pictures. Remember to format the card in the camera after downloading your pictures to the computer
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
Suddenly the card you have inserted is locked so that's why is says write protected. To unlocked the it get or remove your card from your camera. You can see in your memory card there is a small button her try to slide the button to unlocked. Insert your memory card back to your camera and try to take a picture it will take a picture.
Sounds as if the memory card may be corrupted. In order to remove the write protect, make sure you have downloaded and saved all of the images from the memory card to your computer and then having the card in the camera you will need to run the format option and this will permanently remove the write protect as well as all of the images from the card.
The card should be able to be used again after the write protect is removed.
