Question about SimpleTech 320GB SimpleDrive External by Fabrik 320 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Cannot use the device

Hi,
I just received the 320GB USB external mass storage device (BOM Number: 96200-41001-067) as I gift. I plugged it into my USB port and could not find it in "My Computer". I went to the Device Manager to troubleshoot and it said that the device was running properly. With "activate device" highlighted, I clicked OK and the box closed. I went back to "My Computer" and still was unable to find the device. I am attempting to use the device on a 2006 eMachine running Microsoft Windows XP Professional X64 with a 64 bit processor. I need to know if the device is compadable and if not, why doesn't it show up? What am I doing wrong? If you do not know the answer, or are unfamiliar with X64 or the 64 bit processor, please refer me to someone who is.
Thanks,
Melissa Poole

    There were no drivers on CD provided. My machine is not that old, I think my USB port should be sufficient.

  • lisa021661 Jan 09, 2009

    I didn't install a new hard drive, this is an external device, I don't need to make new partitions on my hard drive.

  • lisa021661 Jan 09, 2009

    I have service pack 2. The device manager said the device was performing correctly.

  • lisa021661 Jan 12, 2009

    Finally, you hit the nail on the head. I wasn't leaving the computer off long enough when I turned it off and back on. That made all the difference! It was so simple! Thank you!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, the issue seems to be that the external hard drive shows in Device Manager but not in My Computer. Pls try:

  • open a command prompt window;
  • type "list volume" less the quotes;
  • note drive letter assign to Removeable;
  • open Windows Explorer;
  • enter x:\ where x is the determined drive letter of the external drive in the Address bar;
  • confirm it could be opened;
  • If yes, go back to the command prompt window;
  • type "assign letter x" where x is as above described, press Enter;
  • in some instances, a reboot maybe necessary;
Of course you could also use TweakUI for Windows XP x64.

Above is assuming no other issues other than a hidden drive.

Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

    OR  you can get to the boot order thru the BIOS menu (press F1 at power-on).
    In the BIOS menu select Start Options (hit Enter), the next menu has Startup Sequence selected, hit Enter. You should now see the boot order change page.

What you need to do is hook up to the internet and download the driver from the manufacture then restart your e-machine and then it should find the hard drive and you should be good to go. Let us know if you still are having problems and we'll try to help. Thanks for using FixYa.

To start unplug disk and computer from power (disconnect), if computer is a laptop also remove battery. Wait ten minutes, and plug it back.

Hi there , to star the device (an external USB drive) it is managed mainly at bios level, with windows then installing his own drivers, does not make any difference if it is Windows SP1 or X64.

Then the Simpletech (see the name) it is supposed to be completely self installing and plug and play.

If the disk does not appear on My computer, then either the system or disk have a problem.

Try connecting the disk to a different USB, and also connect it to a different computer to test it.

If the disk works , then it is a Windows problem, otherwise get disk replaced.

You may find diagnostic software from factory website download page below.

Keep the website for future reference.

Yes this device is compatible. I would recommend returning it for one of the same kind, or getting the money back and purchasing a replacement. If you need further assistance please let me know. Also please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thank you,
Lee

    There shouldn't be any reason for a simple USB 2.0 device like that not to automatically recognize. What service pack do you have?
    Thanks,
    Lee

Try this hard drive on another computer to see if you can back up your data.
Then format this hard drive using your computer. When you format the hard drive your data will be lost.

My iomega 320gb hard drive is just beeping when it's plugged in. I've tried plugging it into other computers, trying different USB ports, uninstalling it from my computer then letting it reinstall...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I have a 250 gb simpletech external hard drive. no. 96200-41001-077. I have used it as the time machine backup on my MacBook. It stopped backing up time machine recently. I got the message. Backup failed...

> icon does not show up on the desktop or finder

A major "clue" that one component of the external storage device has failed, namely:

* USB cable (try a different one)

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure

* optionally, the external power-supply that connects to the enclosure

Use a multi-meter to verify the voltage/amperage output of that power-supply.
(Not all external storage devices need such a power-supply.)

> can it be saved?

Partially. Disassemble the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage-device. (Compare it to a heart-transplant -- same body, new heart.)

The original power supply is "SB2D-020-1HA SIMPLETECH AC ADAPTER 12V 1.5A FOR EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE" . Just find a replacement with the correct size plug (center positive) that supplies 12v DC at 1.5amps (1500ma)

If you are using a pre-Windows xp system you may need to install specific drivers for your HD. If you run xp or Vista Try disconnecting completely the power cable from your computer for five minutes and then plug it back to the power and restart it. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes usb mass storage devices suffer troubles caused by electrostatic charges.
