Question about Marantz SR-4200 Receiver

Unit goes into protect mode

At first the unit (secondhand) worked fine, but the next day, it went into protect mode after about 10 seconds. I unplugged everything and it still does it. Is there aanything I can do at home to diagnose? Thanks! Steve

Re: Unit goes into protect mode

Not unless you know how to troubleshoot solid state electronics. If you disconnected the speakers and the unit still goes into the protect mode, most likely you have a short in one of the power output stages. Good Luck

Getting out of protect mode I have a Denon 787 receiver. It was working fine for 8 months. All of sudden, my reciever goes into protect mode after playing for about 30 min. Right after it goes into protect...

most of the receivers come with a cooling fan inside see if its working they usually work when you turn the volume up,, if its working that means you are playing it to loud if you lower the volume a little it will play just fine..( if the fan inside is not working thats the reason it goes into protect mode and it means you must have it repaired,, it goes into protect mode to prevent furter damage to the unit or the speakers,,

Dead no power.. checked main fuse, worked fine last night, went to turn it on today and nothing. its a sx-316 not sx-315, I say this because it tells me this is not a valid model#, but sx316 is printed on...

Check the resistance of the primary on the main power transformer, (with power off) should be 1-3 ohms. If open you need a new transformer.

If good turn it on and check for ac voltage (120v) there.

Protection mode

The protect mode with nothing connected indicates that the output transistors for one or more channels are shorted. These will need to be checked and replaced. This is a simple repair for an experienced audio shop, Figure about $10 for each output transistor and add in another $10-$15 for misc parts that may also be smoked.

I went back and found a loose cable/coax. Re-attached and now the receiver works as good as ever.

The unit is in protect mode. This effectively shuts off the output amplifier section. This happens because a problme is detected in the output section. This unit will require service. Most likely the output transistors have failed. Figure on $20-$40 for parts plus the local labor rate for repair cost.

Stuck on standby

Unit is in protect mode there are a few problems that can trigger protect mode the most common is blown channel (shorted outputs). Sometimes one of the 15v regulators may go bad causing imbalance of supplys triggering protect mode. Also sometimes a bad solder connection could cause unit to go into protect also. I work for Denon authorzied repair center in Michigan if your nearby and Shipping to Michigan is economical let me know

Stuck in protect mode

Speakers shorted out, blew a fuse. Replace the unit or (cross your fingers and) open up the box and find the blown fuse.

Shutdown protection? HELP please

All of the Denon recievers I have repaired (over 100) that shut down after a very short time are going into protect mode. The display lights up and after about 10 seconds the display goes out and the standby led blinks red.
I have found that they have one of 3 possible problems and they all require that the reciever be taken apart and fixed at component level. No way to tell what your problem is until it gets put on a bench and troubleshot.

Problem 1. This is the most common problem. One of the front channels shorts out. On the big heat sink the front channels are at each end. It is the front left channel (close to the display) This requires that the output transistors be replaced as well as some driver transistors and some resistors and a capacitor. Lots of work for a blown channel. Denon has put out a bullitin to upgrade the bias transistor and change a couple of resistors to help compensate for this failure. That channel overheats more than any other channel.

Problem 2. There is a resistor that is right next to the preamp board that opens up. It is a 10 ohm 1 watt resistor and when it opens, it causes the unit to go into protect.

Problem 3. The +12 volt regulator fails. It is in the power supply area on a smal heat sink right next to the -12 volt regulator. Generic part number is KIA7812 It also causes the unit to go into protect.

Most decent repair shops can fix these from about $120 up to about $200. Depending on which problem it is and how fast they are at finding the problem. Most charge labor by the hour.

On 5.1 receivers, some inputs can be switched to Digital/Optical/Coaxial instead of Analog (RCA cables) - look for an Input Mode button. If this doesn't help, turn the unit off, then power it on. If you don't hear a click 3 to 7 seconds after turning it on, it may be in Protect mode, and simply be a coincedence that it failed after installing the new cables. This can be caused by several things, most of which require in-shop service.
