When you get the Gateway splash screen hit the F12 key. This should get you a page with several startup options. Try Safe Mode and see if the computer boots. If it does go into Device Manager and see what it says about the hardware. Also see if you can get into setup, probably by pressing F2 or Del at startup. You might find a problem device in there. It sounds like the power supply, graphics card and monitor are working because you get a splash screen. My first guess would be the hard drive has a problem.

Reboot and keep tapping on F8 to go to Safe Mode. Do not put the reinstallation disk yet. Once in Safe Mode select "last known good configuration".

You can also run "Chkdsk" from the C hard drive Properties if you get to Safe Mode. Double click "My Computer", right click on C drive, select Properties, select Tools tab, go to Error checking and click on "Check now" then check "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attemp recovery for bad sectors" and click "start"

If that doesn't work proceed to do System Restore in Safe Mode or remove previous programs that may have caused your Windows to freeze. If you suspect virus, run your anti-virus in Safe Mode.

If none of the above works then try your XP CD (or reinstallation disk) and do a repair.

How do I stop my gateway computer from circling on start up?

Run the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

I have a gateway w/ vista home premium. After i hit the power button to turn it on, the machine goes thru the regular process of booting and before it gets to the login screen a black screen apears. At...

You can try to press F8 after you first turn on the machine, you want to keep tapping it but not super fast or you can make a keyboard error. Just until a screen appears that will give you the option to boot in Safe Mode.

If you can boot in safe mode you may be able to also choose "Last Known Configuration that Worked" as an option.

This is about the 5th option down on the screen (NOT in VISTA SAFE MODE)

If none of these options work you will just need a Vista Disc. If you use this it will not detroy your data unless you delete the partition.

But you will lose your programs, or at least have to reinstall them.

**IMPORTANT**

You must have a regular VISTA DISC not the ones that come bundled with computers. Those will 9 out 10 times erase everything. and are meant for specific machines. Plus the usually install quite a bit of bloatware on your PC.

Desktop frozen with the monitor showing disorted, green blocks

Try rebooting your computer with a disc or discs that came with it. That disc or discs should reinstall windows. If this does not work try getting linux or dos on a cd an try betting from the cd instead of the HDD. If this does not work either then it must your graphics card or HDD. I am leaning more towards graphics card because ussually your computer will give you a blue screen if your hard drive fails.

BLACK SCREEN

If you have a format disc for your computer or you still have the vista disc you will need to reinstall your Operating System. Reinstalling the Operating system will remove the old one and should fix the problem. But put the disc in the drive before the computer is turned on to reinstall.

I have a laptop gateway computer, the power light is on but everything else is dead, I cannot get the hard drive to eject, all this seem to happen after I got a virus?will this have anything to do with my...

Check all connections mate . Any one of the below could be faulty :-

Power outlet at the wall - try plugging something else into the socket or use a different socket

Are you using any multi-plug adapters? Plug the laptop straight into the mains

Your DC jack may be loose (Where the charger plugs in). This is a common problem and most laptops will get this during their life. Take if to a repair shop to get it fixed. A quick way of checking this is to plug the charger in and wiggle the cord - if the socket where the charger plugs in moves , its a loose jack and it will need to be resoldered.

Dead Battery - Try another battery , or let the battery charge - Try running directly off the mains

Hard drive wont eject? - There not supposed to , the only way you usually disconnect the hard drive is by unscrewing it from the laptop.

How far can you get when you say "Everything else is dead"? can you get to the BIOS? , does anything appear on the screen aty all? If you get a picture but cant boot then its likely that the virus corrupted your windows installation which means you will have to use the repair discs that came with the laptop or another windows install disc to reinstall windows - This will however , lose any documents , music , programs etc that you put on - If you want to keep things off the drive , plug it into another laptop , get all your data back then reinstall into your own laptop. If you rtry putting the drive in another laptop and things dont work and you cant even get your data or the drive doesnt appear , you will need a new hard drive and then have to reinstall windows on the new drive

Pc gone dead

Do you have the recovery discs that originally came with the computer? If you do, I would use these to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows. This would be the fastest option.

To do this:
Insert the disc into the CD-ROM
During boot-up and before the 'Use last known good configuration screen' you're speaking of, it'll ask you do 'hit a key to boot from CD' -- Do so
Follow the on-screen instructions. Your objective is to clean the hard drive completely (reformat) and reinstall windows (recover).

If you do not have the recovery disc that came with the computer, you can use the exact same steps above with a Windows XP disc. Be sure to 'format' and 'install' windows--not just 'repair.'

Doing the above will make you lose all information on the computer, but at least the computer will then be usable. If there is information on the computer that simply must be saved, there are ways of doing that as well; but the explanation will be a bit more in depth.
