Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Backwards compatability I have a 60 gig PS3, which is supposed to be backwards compatible with PS and PS2 games. As a matter of fact, I've played several of them on it in the past with no issues. However, I recently picked up a PS2 game and tried to play it without any success. Whenever I put the game disk in the system, The game appears to load and the screen goes black. The blue and green lights stay on, on the system but then my display on the TV gives the msg "No video input" or something to that effect. Oh yea, I have the PS3 connected with HDMI cable, could that be the problem? I might have answered my own question. If that's the problem I'll be back, but if not can someone help?

Yup... that seems to be the case. Apparently, PS2 games aren't compatable with the HDMI output. When I hooked up the regular A/V cable the game shows up on the TV now. Sucks that the image quality takes such a beating though...

Actuallly a lot of ps2 games can be played with the HDMI connected. I do it all the time... however yes the 60 gig will not play every ps2 game and there is a whole slew of the 60 gigs that are not backwards compatable at all. check it out on wikipedia's page on the ps3.

I haven't had a problem with any ps2 game yet, and the only ps game that I own that hasn't played on my ps3 is FF8.

I thought playstations are all formated to play any made of equal or lesser p.s. value such as p.s.3. should play p.s.2. games

I believe you're asking about backwards compatibility. While I agree a PS3 should be able to play PS2 games, it's sadly not always the case. While they all can play PS1 games, not every PS3 can play PS2 games. PS2 compatibility depends on the model.

Backwards compatibility with PS2 games has slowly been phased out. The original PS3's had hardware emulation (quite literally there is a PS2 inside of your PS3). The later revisions had software emulation only (PS3 processor pretends to be the PS2 processor), and then none at all. No slim PS3 has backwards compatibility.

Hardware emulation:
20 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHB01
60 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHA01

Software emulation:
80 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHE01

In my personal experience, there's no real difference between software and hardware emulation in terms of actual game play. Software emulation has a few hang-ups on some older games, but overall it works pretty well. And it's infinitely better than not having any ability to play PS2 games at all.

Can ps2 games be played on a ps3 and if yes how

Hi, the only ps3 that can play ps2 games is the 40gig one this is the only one they made that was backwards compatible you could also play ps1 games on this ps3, how ever they are hard to come by now and the only real place you can get one from is the well know auction site.
The other thing you could try would be to go into your nearest game shop and ask them if they can get a backwards compatible ps3 they are out their but are hard to come buy new.

their is also ways of changing the firmware on your ps3 to accept the old games how ever doing this is illegal and i cant give you any advice on this as its banned by the site, how ever if you use google and type in how do i make my ps3 backwards compatible this will then list loads of sites that can offer the help your looking for

How do you set up playstation 3 to play playstation 2 games

One Surefire WayThe only way how to play PS2 games on PS3 is to have the correct version of the console. Either your Playstation 3 can play PS and PS2 games or it can’t, and there’s not much to do about it. Most of the PS3 models simply cannot play older titles as they lack the necessary hardware and firmware. However, a few models do have backwards compatibility. The 20 Gb, 60 Gb, and original 80 Gb models all have backwards compatibility, either through hardware or software emulation. The other models lack backwards compatibility, so even knowing how to play PS2 games on PS3 won’t help you out much here.
However, if you do have the correct console model, then there isn’t much to know for learning how to play PS2 games on PS3. Simply insert the game CD or DVD (many original Playstation games are also supported thankfully), and the game will start up. Sometimes, it will tell you that you can’t play the game, but simply hook your PS3 up via wireless or ethernet connection and update the firmware (which also provides improved compatibility with newer versions of Blu-ray discs). Often, this will fix the problems, but not all PS and PS2 games are supported (although most are).
There you have it. Learning how to play PS2 games on PS3 is easy, but if you just randomly picked a Playstation 3 model out at your local retailer, you might have a model lacking in backwards compatibility. One reason they didn’t include such compatibility with all models is an issue of cost, as it saved Sony some money to not include such a feature on all of the models. When they first started selling PS3s for $400, they were losing several hundred dollars (although they are at least breaking even now). Unfortunately, both the new 80 Gb and 160 Gb PS3 models are lacking in such compatibility, so you’ll need to find older models to support your older games.

Please rate my solutions! =)

Sincerely
Aleksandar Adzic

I bought my son a ps3 with 120mb memory for xmas after being told that it will also play ps2 games. Now we can't get the ps2 games to work. is a download needed ? or was I lied to by sales person ?

Well sorry to tell you this but the 120 gig ps3 does not have any backwards capabilities whatsoever. There is no downloads to make ps2 games work. Either the sales person bold faced lied to you, or they had no clue what they were selling. Sony only came out with 2 systems that have backwards capabilities, the 60 and 80 gig systems, although they are limited and the 80 requires a download. Sorry for the headache, if I were you I would give that sales person a good piece of my mind.

Can u play ps2 games on the 40gig ps3?

No, the 40 gig doesn't come with backwards compatibility like the 60 or 80 gig one does. Unfortunately the only way to play them is to get one of the other versions. Although, there are rumors circulating that Sony might release a patch that allows it.

PS3 wont play PS2 games!??

some 80 gb ps3's are backwards compatible, some are not.

unfortunately it looks like you have one that isn't.
my suggestion is to look on the back of the unit, underneath the barcode. the serial number will be there, followed by the model number. if you're model is not CECHE01 it is not backwards compatible.

sorry.
