This icon means your computer is unable to access the operating system it was using last time it started up. This may not mean your computer is broken. My recommendation is to get your MacOSX installation disc (probably Leopard, maybe Tiger) and put it in the drive. Then hold down the Option key and turn the computer on. Keep it held down until you see a row of large buttons with icons on them. If you don't see your MacOSX installation that's on your hard drive, select the DVD with your OSX installation disc and click the right-arrow button on screen to boot from that disc. Once it's booted you can do diagnostics using the software on there. If you do see your OS, select it and the arrow to start up.

Sometimes this can happen if you boot your computer from an external drive and then don't set it back to your HDD, but usually it will figure it out on its own and won't give you that icon for more than a second. Best of luck!

How do i reset my macbook screen appearance

It depends one what you mean. I'm taking a guess here, but I'm assuming you mean your desktop appearance, like desktop icon size, arrangement, font size, etc.

All this settings are set in .plist files located in your home directory Library. Go into your Users folder and navigate to the Library folder and then to the Preferences folder. Look for the com.apple.finder.plist and the com.apple.dock.plist. Rename this files and then restart or logout. When you log back in you should have default settings again.

Our MacBook doesn't do anything but stay on a white screen that just shows that apple going around in circles in the middle of the screen.

You got the rainbow spinning wheel of death, which means take out the RAM chips and re-insert. Now try. Nothing? Replace the RAM chips with RAM chips you know are working. Now try-Nothing? Install disc one of the install disc Apple gives you and go into the system utilities and repair disc permissions and also click on repair disc after that. Now try-Nothing? Replace the hard drive and re-install the OS. Now try-Nothing? Your fu.kd my friend, which means you got a logic board problem.

Twist the Macbook body while turning it on. If that make the image come back, you have a broken logic board. There are Mac Repair Guides that show how to open a Macbook. Watch out for the ribbon cables, those tear easily. Replacement parts are usually available on Ebay. There are third party services that can do it for you, like Mac Repair NYC.

My macbook has a blank white screen, and then it showed a flashing file folder with a question mark on it.

Your macbook is not locating your hardrive.
turn off your laptop, insert the Mac OS disc in the drive, and then reboot while holding down the c key to allow it to boot from the OS on the DVD.
Then use the disk utilities application from the desktop menu and to a disk repair on your hard drive and then restart.

First thing I would do is startup the macbook using the system disk holding down the c key on the keyboard. Once the macbook has started go to file menu and select disk utility and you will be able to check that the disk is showing up.

If it is showing up it could indicate a problem with your system software and what I would do is reinstal the system remembering to preserve users.

If it is not showing up it could be that the cable to the hard drive has come loose and will have to be reseated.

Hope this helps

Screen stays white and it has a flashing file with a ? in folder

Hi there,

what this means is that the computer can't find the system. the repair could be a simple system reinstall or you may need a new harddrive in the computer.

Hope its the reinstall
