Need help transfering data from IBM Aptiva to Dell computer

I have an IBM Aptiva E Series 175 Computer that's about 10 years old and I want to transfer some information from that computer to my new Dell computer. I thought that I could use my little thumbdrive (DataTraveler), but when I plug it into the back of the IBM computer, I get a pop up menu stating "ADD NEW HARDWARE WIZARD". I hit the next button and then I have two options. 1) to search for the best driver or 2) Display a list of all drivers. I've tried the first one with no sucess. I'm not sure what to do now. Is it even possible to use my thumbdrive on this computer. I know it's old, but I was hoping it would work. My CD drive will read the disk, but it will not save information to the drive. My floppy drive doesn't work. Can you help??? Please!!!?? Thanks!!

No, but if I'm forced to go that route I will. I have high speed internet on the Dell computer but not the IBM.

I'll try the smaller flash drive. Do you have any idea of how much that costs? I don't have internet on the IBM, but it sounds like I might have to get internet on the IBM and go that route. Thanks for your help!

I don't think it has ethernet. I actually gave it to my dad about 6 years ago and am just now getting it back so I don't really know what's on the IBM... I'm a dummy when it comes to these things. I guess I need to buck up and put the internet on the IBM. That sounds like the easiest way, but if you have any other ideas, please let me know. Thanks!!!

Possible Fixes:

1)Smaller Flash Drive specifically tested with Win 98
2) this article is a possibility:
3) external CD-Writer that has Win98 Compatibility
4) zip drive or something comparable with Win98 compatibility
5) high speed internet on both machines and use a free file share account
6)if it does have an ethernet card, you could transfer data via a hub/swtich/router or a crossover cable.

if you need help with any of this post a comment back & i'll do my best to help you sort it out

Sounds like the older computer is a 98 machine - Data Traveler does not have 98 drivers due to its size. Your best bet is to find a smaller flash drive that is 98 compatible - or depending on the size of the data you could e-mail it to yourself.

Go to and type: "Ibm Aptiva Support or Lenovo Support" in the search (without the quotes). Go to their drivers and download site, enter your computer's model and operating system. Look for Manuals or Documents on the site to download.

How can I update all the divers on the Aptiva E Series 240? Computer is very slow. I did a driver scan and it tells me there are 11 drivers to be updated. Is there any way I can update them for free, and...

What did you use to do a driver scan? A lot of times, those programs are a way to take your money. That PC is very old and probably does not have any updated drivers. It is not slow because of the drivers, it is slow because the technology is outdated.

I have an old ibm aptiva with usb port nad trying ot transfer files to external hard drive, however it doesnt recognize the harddrive, what can i do?

Depending on the external drive (try it in another computer first) the case may be bad. You can purchase an IDE cable at your local computer store, take the hard drive out of the case, plug it in directly, and voila!

you *might* be able to find a better video card, or more ram, or even a faster cpu for $20 on ebay, but a computer that old is more in need of replacement.

I Need a power supply cord and a keyboard and mouse

If it's a desktop 98% of them all use the same power plug. Just call any local computer repair shop and they'll sell you one for hopefully no more than $5.

My dad's computer won't turn on

chessmaster2 has some good points... you need to make sure your computer is getting power first... a lot of motherboards have a tiny green light that is on when computers are plugged in but off. If you are not sure what a mother board is, then you probably can't do much more than what chessmaster2 gave you. By the way, if this computer is old, the majority of computer problems that you've described are because the power supply is bad. A lot of people don't regularly (2x a year) blow out the dust from their computer. So it collects dusts which then block the ventilation holes, so things overheat and go out, and typically that is the power supply.
