Question about GE PDS22SIS Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Ge fRIDGE The board was just replaced due to the defrost timer being messed up and not working at all. And as far as I know that has fixed the defrost problem that was going on. And if the fridge was unpluged for all that and defrosted one would think that nothing would or could still be in those vents. But nothing about this is making any sense to me. The fan stays on and when the door closes on the freezer the air suction in to the freezer is sooo strong it pulls the door pretty hard. Everything else seems to be functioning right with this. Nothing else seems to be not working the way that it should. Anything else you can think of would be great and thanks a lot for letting me pick your brain apart your a great help.

Hmm, usually these things are straightforward but I have to admit I'm feeling a little stumped on this one. How long has it been since the controller board was replaced to when the refrigerator box started warming up again?

Pull the thin metal panel at the back of the freezer to verify everything is free of frost and obstruction. If the vents and air duct to the refrigerator are clear, then no air suction can form in the freezer.

Regarding the replacement controller, the defrost system has two other major parts, the heater element and the thermostat. If either one of these fail, this will stop the defrost circuit from working. I have seen the defrost thermostat fail on more than one freezer, which is nice because it is a 7 or 8 dollar part and easy to replace. I have yet to see a failed defrost controller.

I missed one of your previous comments about being able to see the other end of the ducting where it enters the freezer. Yes, you can get to it. Pull out the freezer drawer and there will probably be a thin metal panel at the back of the freezer held in with a few sheet metal screws. Remove the panel and look for frost or other obstructions.

The wiring behind the panel is waterproofed, but it is very important that you unplug the refrigerator first before removing this panel.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

I have a GE TFX28PB with an FF error light.

FF probably stands for "Frost Free". Yes. Your defrost circuit must have a temp sensor to tell it when the defrost is working. And for your fridge...it isnt.

The warm fridge/barely cold freezer are both common symptoms of extreme frosting of the cooling coils.

You need to manually defrost this unit and replace the defrost element and/or the controller board/power supply. You can buy them pretty cheaply online. Replacement is a lot easier if you just shut off the fridge and let it come to room temp before removing the coil cover.

Go to the GE website and get an online diagram of your fridge so you can see where the parts all reside. If you timer is mechanical it should have a way to manually trigger it to confirm the heater element works. IC based boards need special commands to go manual.....but you should be able to get this info from GE.

Good luck and be careful.

Fridge stopped working

Sounds as if the unit is stuck in defrost. How old is it? Look for mechanical {twist} timer and turn it until it starts. If it is a newer model unplug unit for 1 minute this might reset control board but you'll have to know if it is either mechanical or Automatic defrost!!

How do i locate the defrost timer on my refrigerator?

I'm having the same problem.I checked out my fridge and found the defrost heater bad. I replaced it and also replaced the defrost thermostat. It fixed it for about 4 days and then the problem reocurred. I strongly believe that one of the relays that are built into the circuit board are going bad or getting stuck. I just hate to replace the board and have the same problem again. But, i have already replaced all other components of the defrost system, so the circuit board can only be the problem. I'm going to give it a shot.
