Question about Actiontec GT704WG Wireless Router (gs583ad3-01)

We have had quite a history with this wireless router...

Well, my family has been using Verizon Online for about two years now, and this is the third or fourth router we have had to receive from them, specifically the second or third router that is this exact same model. The previous ones have all lived their life spans in roughly 8 months time. The end of which, we spend 3 days on the phone with Verizon tech support in India, before they actually admit the router is going to need to be replaced, the majority of which is always spent on the same repetitive "ipconfig" steps. The router never fails not to be able to be used again, and they send us another one. This is my current problem. The past several days, the third light from the left on the router has been deactivated, seemingly like clockwork. Roughly half the time, because of the absence of this light, the internet is unavailable. I have unplugged the router and let it sit, the first time for 5 minutes, and again for 20 another day. This appears to temporarily solve the problem, but within about 6 hours, the helpful effects have subsided. I realize this has been quite a lengthy post, but this problem has been recurring for about 2 years with these routers. My sincere thanks to those who have managed to work their way through my story, and I hope you can help me out.

Re: We have had quite a history with this wireless...

Hi Barthooper If you have tried with several routers and it seems that the problem persists. I believe the problem lies with the DSL line. and with any router. If they have replaced the router and problem persists. I believe a technical problem persists with the DSL line that is coming into your house. Try using the same router in your friends house I am sure that it should work and the problem is very much that's related with the connection into your house!!!

Personally, I'd probably go for replacing the device, and then use the failing one to experiment with third-party firmwares like Tomato and DD-WRT.

Hi I want to know on how to setup the verizon Modem/Router I already have a Westell 6100G and i want to upgrade to the new one called Verizon Wireless modem/router model:GT704WG.

Are you on Consumer Verizon DSL? Fair warning if you are using Business Static- the Actiontec is a poor choice due to issues working on a static IP circuit. - I'd use a 6110 and a third party router! However, by default, the only thing you would need to do to setup the modem is go through the activation page when you plug the modem in. If you require an user name and password, it would set that up. Bar any problems, you can contact Verizon technical support since the Actiontec Gateway is fully supported.

I cannot connect a new lap top to our wireless router

There's no special settings actually in adding another notebook to your wireless network. You can add up to 32 wireless clients on your wireless network. You will see a wireless network icon at the system tray by the clock, just click that and you will see the list of available networks. Choose your network and click connect. That should do it.

I Can't get my new router to work

The easiest way to solve this might be to reset the router to its defaults and start over. Most routers have a reset button on the back. Check your manual for this procedure. Once you've done that, insert the install disk and follow the directions carefully. This is a fairly bullet-proof routine nowadays. If you need more help, let me know your Router make and model and your computer OS.
