The USB cable could be bad (replaceable), you may have failed to install the drivers/other software (download and install them from CD or from Sony's website), the USB port on your computer could be bad (try another USB port), or the USB port on the Walkman could be bad (not repairabale - call Sony and see if you can get an in-warranty replacement).

Computers don't recognize mp3 player

It's hard to help very much without knowing what kind of MP3 player it is but for starters you should:
1. Fully charge the device and then try plugging it in again
2. If that doesn't work try a different USB cable and/or different USB port on your computer.
Some players also have a reset button you could try.

Connecting an Eclipse MP3 Player to a Computer

Many people have found that their computers do not recognize the Eclipse mp3 Player, even after connecting with a USB cable. I had the same problem but discovered that the problem lies with the cables themselves. I have several USB 2.0 5-position cables that fit the Eclipse USB port perfectly, but only ONE of them actually works - the cable that came with the player itself. If you've lost this cable, you may be in trouble.

Attached is a screen-grab of the type of USB plug and port involved. You don't see them around very much anymore, and I have no further advice if your player doesn't have a USB port of this shape.

I don't understand it!

No ext fine, use ext no fine.

It could be the wrong cable/connector.

Computer not picking up the MP3 player

Some of mp3 player when we plug in to computer it requires the driver. But mostly is not so when you encountered your mp3 not recognized by the computer, try to use another USB cable. We don't know if the cable are bad or good, sometimes USB cable work fine and sometimes not. So use another cable.

No USB mode on my sansa e260

I think this is what you are asking. Forgive me if I didn't understand the question correctly.

Switch on the mp3 player. Select "Settings", scroll to "USB Mode" and make sure that "MSC", not "MTP" is selected.

When you next plug in the USB connector, your PC should recognize the Sansa as a standard USB device.

Computer won't recognize device

Your probably using the extension cable that came with the unit, try plugging the device directly into one of the rear ports on your computer without the USB extension cable, it should recognize.
