Question about Fedders A7DH65B2A Dehumidifier

1 Answer

Dehumidifier I have a Maytag 65-pint dehumidifier, which is about 3 years old. It worked OK for a couple of years, but now doesn't take out the moisture. I left it on for a long time once and found that ice had developed on it. I know that being left on could cause a problem, but it also didn't seem to be working before that for several months. It is in my cellar, which can be cool, but not cold. Unfortunately, as I have been looking around online for info, I've found that alot of people with this model also complain of it quitting after 1 or 2 years. It has a 5-year warranty for parts and labor, but I'm not too hopeful about that, as alot of people have complained of getting the runaround from Maytag and Fedders when the units failed. I really am NOT handy, but am hoping I can get the dehumidifier going because I don't have the resources to replace it. Help?

If it does not get cold anymore, then a freon charge is necessary, provided the compressor was not damaged from "left it on for a long time once and found that ice had developed on it. I know that being left on could cause a problem"

I would like to know the average monthly cost of using a 65 pint dehumidifier if it runs continuously for 24 hours for about 300 days a year

To find the Annual Energy Cost, look in the Owner's Manual or other paper work that came with the unit. The Energy Star rating paper work will have that information. However, that cost does not include routine maintenance cost or any repairs that may arise from running the unit constantly for 360 days. Sounds like you'll be running it in a damp basement.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a dehumidifier that runs but does not pull moisture from the air in the basement. the application is about 3-5 years old. It is a Maytag and I purchased it at Home Depot. The Model is M3DG30B2A A....

There are a couple of things you can check for and they are; First of all, when you say the unit is running you may only be hearing the fan run. The compressor may possibly be not running(if it isn't running you will have no dehumidification as a dehumidifier is really nothing more than a small airconditioner.(cooling a coil for the moisture in the space to condense to). Second, The space may be to cool for the unit to run and dehumidify well, The space should at least be 65 degrees or warmer. Third, the system may have a leak and it is out of or low on refrigerant(freon). Depending on what you paid for the unit and if it has any remaining warranty(parts only-labor not covered) if the system is out of refrigerant or if the compressor is bad it probably isn't worth the cost to repair.

Auto-defrost not working at all

Unless equipped with special equipment most dehumidifiers will produce little if any water under 65-70 degrees. Many state operation down to 50-60 degrees but this was under lab conditions and therefore a marketing tool. The best performance is gained when the air temperature is above 70 degrees. The water you are finding is from melting frost, if you have a humidity problem you should be adding heat to the area to be dried, warm air holds much more moisture than cold and drying is much more effective if you can heat the area to around 80 degrees.
